Tough news cycle.
Reports nj.com,"according to a person familiar with knowledge of the team’s personnel decisions..."
The Yankees “are talking to everybody free agents and trades, starting pitching and bullpen,” the person said. “Talking to everybody on market. Nothing close.”
Yep. Nothin' happening, sez nobody, (and you didn't get it from me...)
So it goes. The takeaway: Sleep well, everyone, because the Yankee brain trust is omnipresent, tireless, relentless... spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Somewhere, right now, on a muddy hillside near Timbuktu, shoeless street urchins are hitting rocks with vuvuzelas filled with dried dingo stool, and a Yankee scout is watching, taking notes and waiting for the DNA results from the lab. According to unnamed sources, they are even monitoring free agent talks over Marcel Orzuna, a RH-slugger, which makes so sense whatsoever, unless Hal has decided to become the planet's preeminent collector of LF/DHs.
This is a weekend for Biden to eliminate the Diet Coke button, for Bills fans to destroy folding tables and the rest of us to remembering the greatest LF ever, Hank Aaron... whom Yankee fans never got to fully appreciate. Aaron played in the NL, only facing the Yanks in the world series of 1957 and 1958 (hitting .364 overall), and, of course, he topped our ultimate legend, the Babe, himself.
Greatest player of all time? Who else qualifies?
Let us also note that Austin Romine has signed with the Cubs for the bargain basement price of $1.5 million. Frankly, I don't get this. Romine, at 32, hit .238 last year for Detroit and supposedly drew raves for defense and leadership. Yet he signs for a $3 million pay cut? And once again, as a backup? Huh... what am I missing?
I understand that the Yankees - in their inexhaustible, ceaseless and unrelenting quest to improve - would not join the bidding on Romine.
They have Kyle Higashioka and Gary Sanchez.
Let's leave it at that. (Go, Bills!)

That sounds like Trump's White House Schedule...
"President Trump will work from early in the morning until late in the evening. He will make many calls and have many meetings. "
Hank Aaron was a right fielder.
Hank Aaron was a right fielder.
I still can't believe that anyone would look upon Austin Romine as the second coming. Or the third or fourth. There's a reason he wound up playing in Detroit last year, and... don't look now but the Cubs are heading back where they belong.
Don't tell me he'd make a better backup or even a first stringer. He's got a lifetime negative WAR. Kyle is a better fit financially and has a positive WAR (but not by much). And whether you like it or not, he's never going to replace Sanchez. Gary is our catcher for the foreseeable future. However long that may be. The Brain is convinced Sanchez will regain some semblance of his rookie year performance, in spite of the obvious fact that Sanchez has shown himself in print to lack even the smallest grain of self-awareness.
So, please, let's ditch the Romine porn for something a little more titillating. He's a little too soft core for my taste, like choking the chicken over an old Victoria's Secret catalogue.
This comment from Aaron Hicks in today's NYPost (the fascist rag of alien predator Rupert Murdoch) nearly made me lose my breakfast:
"He pronounced to The Post: “...I’ve been training hard to be able to get back to the player I want to be..."
Not that he wants to get back to the player he was, but the player he's never been.
Losing JR Murphy for this guy was a lose-lose for both teams.
Dick, I liked Romine as much as anybody, and you can't make a Caesar Salad without him, but I have to agree with you.
It's Realmundo we should be signing. Sanchez will never be anywhere as good and regardless of how homer happy he gets, he won't hit for average or OBP, will continue to strike out at astonishingly high levels, will kill rallies with freakish regularity, and his defense will never be MLB-ready.
Now aside from that, he doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb in the hardware section. And there seem to be some real psychological issues there.
But we're tied to him like the Marquis de Sade to his whipping post. I don't get it. There's a time to cut bait and go. With did it with Montero. Why we aren't doing it with Sanchez is beyond me.
Oh, right. Potential. Dumbfucks.
Totally agree that it SHOULD be Realmuto. But it won't be, so I thought, 'Hey, Romine might be a nice spare part to share the position with Higgy, and cheap enough even for Hal.' No lusting or chicken abuse involved!
But...no can do.
Just please don't fool yourself into thinking that Gary Sanchez will ever again contribute anything, at least not in a Yankees uniform. The guy is a psychological wreck and probably a physical one, as well. He's only in the majors at this moment because the Brain won't ever admit he is wrong.
The catching position will be a sucking wound on the Yankee for years to come.
And great as he was, I don't think Henry Aaron was the greatest player in major-league history.
I think that honor has to go to The Babe. Nobody else ever pitched and hit at those levels.
After that I'd say it's Willie Mays, who was a better outfielder than Aaron (or anyone), and a great base stealer. Then maybe Martin Dihigo, the incredibly diverse player in the Negro Leagues (contrary to what MLB wants to think, the surviving stats from those leagues don't really tell us very much), with the likes of Josh Gibson, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Honus Wagner, Satchel Paige, Lefty Grove, Ty Cobb, Oscar Charleston, Rickey Henderson and a few others at least in the running.
(Very hard to get a good idea of current or recent players thanks to all the ongoing juicing.)
But The Babe. The Babe was the greatest baseball player who ever lived. In view of what he did to transform professional sports, he may be the most important athlete who ever lived.
It took The Babe 8,399 at-bats to get to 714.
Hank needed 12,364 to accumulate his total.
Bonds needed 9,847 - but I believe we can easily deduct 100hrs for the period 2001-2004 - making Bonds #3 on the list behind Hank and The Babe.
Bonds, in my mind, belongs down the list with A-Rod and Albert and in the same legitimate group of Mays, Junior and Thome. And it’s a shame about Bonds - he was a certain first-ballot until he decided to juice it up. He just didn’t need it. That’s what happens when ego gets in the way. Too bad.
And last, but not least, (and I might be mistaken about this) The Babe still shares the AL lead for shutouts by a lefty with (9) Ron Guidry.
I’m with you Horace: It’s The Babe, first, last and always, the greatest.
I truly believe that had The Mick played baseball in the steroid era (and avoided cocktails during or just before a game)he would have hit 50 HR from each side of the plate. Especially with expansion and the diluted pitching talent in baseball. Half the pitchers in baseball today (about 180-ish) would never have escaped Triple A before baseball added 14 teams starting in the early 60's.
Power hitters like Harmon Killebrew, Rocky Colavito, Al Kaline, Willie Mays and a few others would have hit 60 + every year.
Hammerin' Hank is still the career home run king.
Babe Ruth is still the season home run king (apologies to Mr. Maris, but he is second).
I'm rooting for Bills/Bucs in the Stupid Bowl. Just to drive bahstan fans nuts. They won't know who to root against. A win-win.
