What if...

If we had not blown four games in the last inning during the past month, several with amazingly large leads going in, we would be 54-41.

We would be four games out of first. And only three in the all-important loss column.  Since last night's fuckup was against Boston, we'd be three games out and two in the loss column.

None of us would be hanging our heads in shame and anger because we're Yankees fans.

My math may suck, but you get the idea.

So what you're saying is: Aroldis Chapman's collapse ruined the season.

What if the earth were square instead of round, then what? What if people could fly? These things all average out. If you think the Yankees are a really good team and find themselves in the toilet because of a few unlucky flukes, then you've had one too many of something that's not good for your brain.

Now is a good time to paean Brett Gradner

Guys, lighten up, already.

Sure--of someone points out that JM makes one of his dumb observations, it's time to lighten up. After all, he wasn't being dumb, he was just kidding. Wink, wink.

Puckered must have the night off from the pizza pit.

Lucky us. But then there's two kinds of luck. The good kind, and the other.

...and math is hard. Especially after a couple of scotches on Friday night. And you don't really care.

Sorry, no WHAT IFs. The Yankees are a choke team. As much as I root for them, that is a fact.

This team had an Arson Squad bullpen from the get-go. A lot of expensive pieces brought in put together haphazardly for no good reason. Just because you have a bullpen loaded with flame throwers doesn't mean squat. The decision to bring Chapman back was an odd one, and it kind of makes sense with Brian Cashman. This thing with bringing back pitchers, remember Javier Vasquez? And retaining Zack Britton, who hasn't been the same since he pitched for Baltimore. I think it's over-reliance on bringing in older pitchers and not developing nearly enough of your own in the minors. Too many injuries, wasted money, wasted roster spots, and not enough young blood developing.
