Just in case you're wondering about Gary Sanchez...

With the Twinkies this spring, the Kraken is 1-for-13 with a double, two walks and six strikeouts.

(Gio Urshela 2-for-15 with a walk and two Ks.)

Time for YES to declare Cashman the winner in the trade?

(For the record, we must not hold it against Sanchez simply because he didn't turn out to be the player we wanted. In many ways, he was a victim of false expectations, created by his sensational debut in 2016.

He had never been so dominant in the minors. We had no business thinking he would hit both for power and average.

One of the best reasons for trading Sanchez was to see if he can turn around his career in a new city, with a new franchise. If he doesn't improve defensively and lower the strikeouts, he's done as a frontline catcher.)

I see the White Sox DFAed Blake Rutherford today. Remember when he was the central prospect in the David Robertson/Tommy Kahnle/Todd Frazier trade in 2017?

Seems like all the prospects we sent to Chicago busted hard: Rutherford, Tito Polo and Ian Clarkin. Polo has been playing in the Mexican League since 2019. Clarkin is in Colorado's farm system now and put up a 7.86 ERA in 68.2 IP last season. He's 27 now.

That trade was a big win in retrospect and also a reminder that all our hyped prospects are bad.

Yes, something to think about when Cashman prospects hugs instead of going for Olson or signing one of the big shortstops.

Upon further thought on my reply, how crazier does it seem now seeing how prospects the Yankees trade rarely pan out yet they’re prospect hugging Volpe and Peraza like they’re going to ride in and save the day.

"...a reminder that all our hyped prospects are bad."

All our NON-hyped prospects are bad, too.

How did that happen? The Yankees farm system was considered one of the best in baseball back then. None of them - NOT ONE OF THEM HAS PANNED OUT. A complete bust.

And then I remember: we picked Clarke Schmidt in the first round of the 2017 draft, a few short months after he had TJ - what were they thinking?

Wait. Never mind. For a moment I forgot who handled that draft and every one since. What was i thinking?

I suppose it would be fair to say the jury is still out on Schmidt at 26, but...

I know. This is the mystery: how is it that even those Yankees draft picks and signings who are NOT utterly ridiculous on the face of it...still flame out or misfire with other teams?

Is Cooperstown Cashman feeding them some mystery juice down on the farm? Who knows?

Bizarre.

El Duque, I understand it is worse than you listed. The most important factor is that some or many in the Yankee hierarchy actually believed that Stud To Dud Sanchez had something to offer. At the top, I believe is Genius Cashman, who gets a lot of his ideas from Ike Fishman,
the analytics geek, whom Cashman talked clueless Hal into hiring. At least Nohitgoshioka will play defense this season. With more at bats, he might actually bat lower than he did last season.
