All-Time Yankees, Tournament, Round 2, Part 1: A "seeded" team falls

It wouldn't be "madness" without a bracket buster or two. Here are the second-round games from the left side of the bracket (the "Clipper" and "Bomber" regions ...

1927 Yankees beat 1953, 4 games to 2

1932 Yankees beat 1978, 4 games to 0

1951 Yankees beat 1938, 4 games to 1

2009 Yankees beat 1939, 4 games to 1

Click below to get more details on each series ...

1927 Yankees beat 1953, 4 games to 2

Game 1: 1927 wins, 5-3
Game 2: 1953 wins, 11-4
Game 3: 1927 wins, 5-4
Game 4: 1927 wins, 3-0
Game 5 :1953 wins, 4-3
Game 6: 1927 wins, 1-0

The 1927 Yankees may be known as "Murderers Row," but it was the pitching that won this series, with shutout wins in Games 4 and 6. The biggest offensive outburst was when 1953 pounded Waite Hoyt in Game 2, but Hoyt came back with a complete game shutout in the clinching Game 6. Allie Reynolds was the loser in the final game, with the only run coming when Earle Combs led off the eighth with a triple and came around to score on a wild pitch. Bob Meusel was series MVP, hitting .400 with 4 HRs and 7 RBIs. Babe Ruth hit .364 with 3 HR. For 1953, Yogi Berra and Hank Bauer each drove in 5 runs.

1932 Yankees beat 1978, 4 games to 0

Game 1: 1932 wins, 5-2
Game 2: 1932 wins, 7-3
Game 3: 1932 wins, 8-6
Game 4: 1978 wins, 6-5

Remember how dominant the 1978 team seemed in the first round? That didn't last long. Leadoff hitter Ben Chapman was 12-for-18 and scored 8 runs for 1932 to get the MVP, while Lou Gehrig was 8-for-17 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs and Tony Lazzeri hit .375 and drive in 8 runs. The 1932 team completed the sweep with a walk-off when shortstop Lyn Lary (who?) hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the ninth of Game 4. Graig Nettles had 3 HRs and 7 RBIs, and Thurman Munson hit .467 in a losing effort.

1951 Yankees beat 1938, 4 games to 1

Game 1: 1951 wins, 4-2
Game 2: 1951 wins, 5-0
Game 3: 1938 wins, 1-0
Game 4: 1951 wins, 5-4
Game 5: 1951 wins, 9-5

1938 won its first-round matchup with pitching, and got beat with pitching in the second round, scoring just 12 runs in 5 games. Vic Raschi won two games and Allie Reynolds tossed a 4-hit shutout in Game 2. Gil McDougald was the MVP, going 8-for-19 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs. Yogi, Hank Bauer and Joe Collins each had 4 RBIs for 1951. Tommy Henrich hit .400 with 3 HRs and 4 RBIs for 1938, while Monte Pearson and Johnny Murphy combined on a 4-hit shutout in 1938's only win.

2009 Yankees beat 1939, 4 games to 1

Game 1: 1939 wins, 4-1
Game 2: 2009 wins, 17-16
Game 3: 2009 wins, 7-1
Game 4: 2009 wins, 15-2
Game 5: 2009 wins, 2-1

The 1939 team becomes the first "seeded" team to lose, as the 2009 offense went ballistic in Games 2 and 4. Game 2 was especially crazy, with the teams combining for 33 runs, 39 hits and 7 home runs. Melky Cabrera started the scoring in that game with a second-inning grand slam, and Mark Teixeira, Eric Hinske and Brett Gardner added HRs for 2009, while Tommy Henrich, Babe Dahlgren and Red Rolfe had HRs for 1939. A-Rod had 2HRs in the Game 4 blowout. Robinson Cano was the series MVP, going 11-for-22 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs, while Cabrera had 8 RBIs. The 2009 team has scored 15 runs or more 3 times in the first two series.

So, here's how things look so far:

It would be funny in the unlikely event that 1977 meets 1978 in the final...

I know these outcomes are based on a fair application of stats, but it galls me that 2009 would win. Basically because I think fans of all stripes tend to give too much weight to teams that they have personally seen and experienced, short-shrifting teams of bygone eras. Recency bias, in other words.

2009 was fun, but I dunno about that one.

Never in this world or the next one do the 2009 Yankees bulldoze the 1939 team. The short series format doesn't tell us much.
