The All-Time Yankees Tournament, Round 1, part 2

We continue with more matchups featuring Ruth vs. Reggie, Derek vs. DiMaggio, and the rest. It's the Scooter region and the Bambino region games today. In an odd twist, we have three sweeps and three series that went the full 7 games.

Here we go ...

1958 Yankees beat 1943 Yankees, 4 games to 3

1936 Yankees beat 1962 Yankees, 4 games to 0

1949 Yankees beat 1923 Yankees, 4 games to 3

1977 Yankees beat 1928 Yankees, 4 games to 0

1947 Yankees beat 1996 Yankees, 4 games to 0

1950 Yankees beat 1937 Yankees, 4 games to 3

To see more details about each series, click below ...

1958 Yankees beat 1943 Yankees, 4 games to 3

Game 1: 1958 wins, 4-3, 17 innings
Game 2: 1958 wins, 4-2
Game 3: 1943 wins, 7-3
Game 4: 1943 wins, 10-9
Game 5, 1958 wins, 2-1
Game 6: 1943 wins, 6-4
Game 7: 1958 wins, 5-2

It starts with a doozy, a 17-inning game that ended when Gil McDougald hit a 1-out, bases-loaded grounder to second that Joe Gordon made an error on to allow Bobby Richardson to score the winning run (Richardson was pinch-running for Elston Howard, who led off the inning with a double). It ended with a good Game 7, too, with Mickey Mantle hitting a tie-breaking 2-run HR in the bottom of the 8th.  Yogi Berra was series MVP, hitting .467 with a home run and 5 RBIs, but I would have given it to Mantle, who hit just .222 but had 3 HRs and drove in 9 runs. Whitey allowed just 2 earned runs in 16 innings, winning game 5. For the 1943 Yanks, Johnny Lindell hit a walk-off solo HR off Ryne Duren in Game 4, one of 2 HRs and 6 RBIs he had that game.

1936 Yankees beat 1962 Yankees, 4 games to 0

Game 1: 1936 wins, 7-6
Game 2: 1936 wins, 7-4
Game 3: 1936 wins, 6-5, 10 innings
Game 4: 1936 wins, 8-1

The M&M boys were the meh-and-meh boys, with Mantle just 3-for-13 and Maris 2-for-15, while George "Twinkletoes" Selkirk was the series MVP, hitting .364 with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs. Joe DiMaggio had a pair of solo home runs and Lou Gehrig was just 3-for-14, but drove in 4 runs. A 2-run, 9th-inning home run by Elston Howard sent Game 3 into extra innings, but an RBI single by Bill Dickey won the game for the 1936 team.

1949 Yankees beat 1923 Yankees, 4 games to 3

Game 1: 1923 wins, 7-3
Game 2: 1949 wins, 9-3
Game 3: 1923 wins, 6-5
Game 4: 1949 wins, 7-4
Game 5: 1923 wins, 3-2
Game 6: 1949 wins, 6-3
Game 7: 1949 wins, 3-1

Down  3 games to 2, the 1949 Yankees rally behind Allie Reynolds and Eddie Lopat to win the final two games. Reynolds had a pair of complete-game wins. Joe DiMaggio was series MVP, hitting .308 with 2 HRs and 10 RBIs. In a nod to what would happen years later, Aaron ended up with more home runs than Ruth -- but this time it was Babe's teammate, Aaron Ward, who had 3 HRs and 7 RBIs to lead the 1923 team. Ruth hit .304 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs.

1977 Yankees beat 1928 Yankees, 4 games to 0

Game 1: 1977 wins, 5-1
Game 2: 1977 wins, 11-4
Game 3: 1977 wins, 18-4
Game 4: 1977 wins, 7-6

Surprisingly, this was a total blowout. Once again, a series win for the 1977 Yankees was highlighted by a player hitting 3 HRs on 3 consecutive at-bats. This time, though, it was ... Cliff Johnson in Game 3. Graig Nettles and Chris Chambliss each added a pair of home runs in that game. Johnson and Thurman  Munson each hit .471 for the series, and every 1977 starter went at least 8 innings. Johnson was the MVP. (And the 1970s teams are unbeaten in the first round; the 1978 Yanks swept 1956 in the Clipper region.)

1947 Yankees beat 1996 Yankees, 4 games to 0

Game 1: 1947 wins, 5-3
Game 2: 1947 wins, 6-3
Game 3: 1947 wins, 5-1
Game 4: 1947 wins, 11-0

Another blowout. No offense from 1996. Joe Girardi was a brutal 0-for-14, and Charlie Hayes, Tino Martinez and Luis Sojo were a combined 3-for-39. The only 1996 hitters with more than 2 hits were Mariano Duncan (6-for-15) and Darryl Strawberry (5-for-13). Tommy Henrich was MVP, hitting .467 with 3 HRs and 6 RBIs, while Yogi hit .563 with 6 RBIs. Bill Bevins tossed a complete-game, 5-hit shutout in Game 4 to close it out.

1950 Yankees beat 1937 Yankees, 4 games to 3

Game 1: 1950 wins, 5-1
Game 2: 1937 wins, 11-4
Game 3: 1950 wins, 7-6, 12 innings
Game 4: 1937 wins, 12-8
Game 5: 1950 wins, 4-3
Game 6: 1937 wins, 11-2
Game 7: 1950 wins, 10-4

We close out Round 1 with a 7-game series featuring mostly slugfests. The 1937 team outscored 1950 48-40, but dropped the series thanks to a pair of 1-run losses. The 1950 Joe DiMaggio was the series MVP, hitting .379 with 3 HRs and 5 RBIs, but Joe DiMaggio of 1937 might have been better, hitting .414 with 1 HR and 8 RBIs. Allie Reynolds got 2 wins, and Gene Woodling drove in 8 runs for the 1950 team.

So, there you go. Here's the updated bracket:

Wow. This is incredible.

Don't sleep on the 1977 Yankees. It wouldn't surprise me if they don't battle the 1978 Yankees for everything.

Twinkletoes Selkirk? How did I miss this guy throughout Yankee history?

Terrific player. Fast, a good fielder, very good hitter. Often had to split playing time later in his career, as the Yanks also had DiMaggio, Keller, and Henrich on the roster. Ah, the good old days!

Thanks for doing this and I appreciate the best of 7 format.

El Duque, if the 1977 teams gets past the 1998 team, I will assume BernBaby is using HoraceClarke's computer, such as it is.

Hey, the 1977 team was sneaky great. They could easily beat the 1998 team in a short series.

But then, almost anybody can beat anybody in a short series.
