Dear Editor,
Regarding the letters "Yogi Berra deserves a memorial in St. Louis" (Sept. 29) and "Yogi Berra statue belongs in New York, not St. Louis" (Oct. 2):
Yes, we know all about the many World Series games, the rings, awards and countless broken records, but did you know Yogi Berra was inducted in the Missouri Hall of Fame in 1972? He was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in the 1980s.
He was presented with an honorary doctorate at St. Louis University by Father Lawrence Biondi in 2007. What about the bronze star on Joe Edwards' great Walk Of Fame?
A nice bronze statue would be a fine tribute to a fine man who happened to be one of the world's classiest athletes and just happened to be born on the Hill in St. Louis, where his home remains and is still occupied by his family. From there he went to the invasion at Normandy and then to the batter's box of the New YorkYankees.
Let's get together all you fortunate fans of fame, freedom and faithful regard, for a true hero who's spirit still remains with us. How about it all you merchants ... a nice spot near St. Ambrose Church, where he and Carmen were married? Or Sublette Park, where he played his first baseball game? Let's start a campaign to do just that, to honor one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known. I know because Yogi is my brother-in-law.
