HoraceClarke66: "But it's a long, long while, from May to December..."

From HoraceClarke66... (With thanks to Kurt Weill.)

 “And the days grow short
When you reach September…
(And yes, I know it’s October!)

“And the days turn to gold
As they grow few
September, November…”

“And these few golden days
I’d spend with you
These golden days
I’d spend with you.”

John and Suzyn may be calling their last regular season game today. This should be our focus. Instead, we're forced to concentrate on Taillon, Torres's shitty attitude, and Boone's terrible managing.

What a load of crap.

Turtle soup for dinner tonight!

I am totally fed up with the Yankees organization. A friggin waste of time.

HoraceClarke67 said...

When the odds are sayin' you'll never win
That's when the grin should start
You've gotta have hope
Mustn't sit around and mope
Nothin's half as bad as it may appear
Wait'll next year and hope
When your luck is battin' zero
Get your chin up off the floor
Mister you can be a hero
You can open any door, there's nothin' to it but to do it
You've gotta have heart
Miles 'n miles n' miles of heart
Oh, it's fine to be a genius of course
But keep that old horse
Before the cart
First you've gotta have heart!

We may say goodbye to John and Suzyn, but we will definitely be saying goodbye to Ken Singleton. One of the best.

And I pray the Yankees lose today, then fly somewhere and lose again. Let Tuesday begin the winter of our discontent.

LOSE, YOU PRETENDERS IN PINSTRIPES, LOSE! LOSE BIG! YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF THAT UNIFORM!

Ken of Brooklyn said...

I'm listening today for John and Suzyn. I only tune into the games via WFAN, and there will be a smoldering ash filled crater in the center of my heart when they decide to retire. They, and this IIHIIFIIC sight, have been the only tangental joy this team has brought to me for a very VERY long time. I do understand the rational of The Master's detractors, but I will GREATLY morn the loss of his majestic and divine presence.

DickAllen said...

Amen, Ken. You speak my mind and my heart clearly.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Is Ken Singleton doing the game on YES today?

The Master has been unusually vocal in his disappointment with the Yankee braintrust and WFAN this year. I wonder if he has scorched earth farewell address planned. I hope so.

13bit said...

Weeping over here, Hoss.

You sure know how to yank someone's heartstrings.

I think I'm going to fire up the old jalopy and go photograph some funeral homes.

JM said...

One hour to Armageddon.

doctor zesty von lemon squeezy said...

And like a good Gleyber, Torres is . . . . leading off and playing second. Sanchez is behind the plate, eyes closed and batting eighth. Gardy-Party is in center and batting seventh and Stanton is DH'ing somewhere. Wouldn't have been my lineup. But I'm not Doom and KaBooney. Today marks the end of many things, both bad and good. This organization really needs to be dewormed, deflea'd, deturtled.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

The brainless trust decides to DL DJ today. As usual, too late.

HoraceClarke67 said...

I try, bitty, I try! :)

Yeah, and Taillon on the mound, Odor in the lineup, and DJ on the DL.

Great. Best foot forward, right. Oy.

TheWinWarblist said...

I am near inchoate with anger. Taillion? Odor? ICS behind the plate? Isn't it already clear that Tampa is a far superior club? That's what you are throwing out there against them? That lineup isn't fit to carry Tampa's dirty jockstraps!! Just forfeit and go home already!!

Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! Steinbrenner Sucks!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!! STEINBRENNER SUCKS!!!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Winnie,

I could not have said it better. Louder maybe, but not better.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Michael Kay looked better behind home plate, catching Kenny Singleton, than ICS has all season.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Faint praise, Hoss. Faint praise.

JM said...

Taillon actually looks....good?

Poor DJ. He just couldn't hack warmups today. This has to be killing him.

But Odor. For fuck's sake. Wade. Velasques. Not Odor.

TheWinWarblist said...

Another double play.

JM said...

Stanton could've beat that out if he tried. He can't be that slow.

JM said...

Jameson looks like the 20-year today. Smooth and potent.

TheWinWarblist said...

JM, he's not fast.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Speaking of faint praise, and depressing statistics...

Barring a 27-hit game today, your New York Yankees will compile fewer hits this year than they have in ANY non-lockout/Covid season since 1969.

That's right. Their 1,262 hits (and counting?) are the lowest since that 80-81-1 team, two stadia ago. It will be easily their lowest total in the DH era.

You might assume that this is because they are getting all sorts of walks instead.

NEVER ASSUME!

In many of those seasons, the Yanks drew MORE walks than they did this season—along with, almost always, 200-400 more hits.

What a team.

HoraceClarke67 said...

And of course, we can't hit Wacha—a 2.16 ERA against us, 5.76 against everyone else.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Kiermaier. Why can we never get that guy out?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Hoss,

Yankee hitting this year is pathetic. Excruciatingly so.

HoraceClarke67 said...

At least Jameson came to play.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Jameson is a waste of good whiskey. He'll still leave before the Yankees have a hit.

Rufus T. Firefly said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Rufus T. Firefly said...

Admirable, yes. But wasted because these yankees can't hit, don't adjust, and just swing for the fences.

JM said...

Taillon got 10 outs and doing well. So let's bring in Wanda so we give up some runs.

And he begins...a hit.

JM said...

Peralta is a ticking time bomb. Just a matter of when.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Played right into boneheads hands. He WANTED him to do that.

BULLSHIT!

TheWinWarblist said...

You put the shift on and then pitch the lefthanded batter down and away. If you play them to pull why wouldn't you pitch them in? Meadows gets a double on a ground ball to third.

Fuck the Yankees stats department.

Steinbrenner sucks. Boone sucks. Cash sucks.

JM said...

Choi walks. Two on. Still one out.

I smell a 3-run jack...

JM said...

Is there a delay before comments appear? The timing has been odd for a while now.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Jameson must be doing shots now, watching this horseshit.

JM said...

This is incredible. Take him out.

Odor, not a third baseman, doesn't get the double play.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

JM,

It might be those Ukrainian "art" sites you visit.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Yes, the Yankees' motto: never, ever play the hot hand.

Just a field day on everything that's wrong with the All Stats, No Feeling Game today: A pitcher who has yet to allow a run, pulled with one out in the fourth. A double surrendered on an infield squibber, thanks to the shift.

If these Yanks get anymore brilliant, they'll lose by 10.

JM said...

Not Gary's fault. Wanda stinks.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Wow! Wide pitch that's NOT ICS's fault.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Sancho showing his whole, all-around game again. For me, he ranks absolutely last in Doug's scale of people I would least like to see up. In fact, he would rank last of people I would least like to see, period.

At least The Gleyber fielded his position.

TheWinWarblist said...

Boone could've left Tailion in for this crap. Nice play by Gleyber, but they're warming up Mean Spent Dead-armed Chad Green.

JM said...

Peralta should not come back after that display.

GIVE THE FUCKING KID A KIDNEY ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

The Master is really into the game today.

Joe Formerlyof Brooklyn said...

It's a good thing I made a vow to NOT bet baseball.

I would have put $ down on TB scoring off Wandyman.

JM said...

My God, he's back out.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

The good news: "Holmes is up, that's not Green warming up in the bullpen."

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Peralta overachieved there. I'll take it.

JM said...

Now that Peralta found his groove, Boone takes him out.

Of course.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Peralta is a ticking grenade. Better to have John Holmes pitching.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

What, his first name isn't John???

Rufus T. Firefly said...

OK, can the Yankees score at least one fucking run now?!

How about the old crooked number even?

DickAllen said...

This is exciting. I’m on the edge of my seat wondering how the Yankees will fuck this one up.

HoraceClarke67 said...

All right, we give Ma Boone his props. Now all we have to do is get a run off Sandy Koufax at the peak of his career...uh, I mean Michael Wacha in a down year.

JM said...

They can't hit the 5+ ERA pitcher.

JM said...

Another DP. Signature of the 2021 Yankees.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

GIDP is a good start!

ranger_lp said...

FYI...Giants won in OT vs Saints...

TheWinWarblist said...

The Master: Another double play! Yeah, you can't get too excited about the Yankee offense.

Doug K. said...

The Giants won! In OT!Anything is possible!

DickAllen said...

It may not happen today, it may not happen tomorrow, but it’s gonna happen.

I’m actually more enthused about NYJets football

TheWinWarblist said...

The Giants won? In OT!? Well, that's the last good sports news NY will get this week. Pack it up. Head home. Beat the traffic.

JM said...

Sanchez and Odor coming up to start the sixth with two outs.

HoraceClarke67 said...

How can you possibly be a team built around Three True Outcomes, and lead the league in DPs? By almost 20?

Oh, right! Because you're Three True Outcomes team put together by Brian Cashman!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

One hit in five innings.

Tremendous offense. Or tremendously offensive.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Okay, so five scoreless against the Ray's nothing pitcher.

That was the Yanks' best chance to win, thrown away. Their odds of taking this game are rising exponentially.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Bonehead has given up on the game. Green is up in the bullpen.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Yanks 35-40 against the AL East. Which says everything.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Great, he's going to walk Franco, so the kid can display yet another part of his game.

JM said...

Is there a new NFL rule that you can't win in OT on a field goal?

I'm confused.

DickAllen said...

Giancarlo, where have you gone?

DickAllen said...

It’s not that you can’t win JM - the other team gets a shot after a field goal. A touchdown ends it.

JM said...

Holy fuck!!!!

HoraceClarke67 said...

Urshela!

JM said...

Gio pulled a Jeter. He's hurt.

HoraceClarke67 said...

That was Jeterian.

JM said...

Incredible.

Time for Wade.

Great play. Just great.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Sancho was so inspired by that he's not going to swing at a single pitch.

JM said...

Why couldn't it have been Odor or Sanchez?

HoraceClarke67 said...

Oh, wait, right—the one two feet out of the strike zone. Can't we just give that fool the rest of the afternoon off?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Strikeout on a ball way outside the zone. Who'd have predicted that?

HoraceClarke67 said...

Take one for the team, Odor!!

HoraceClarke67 said...

And Odor swings at ball four, well out of the strike zone. Useless.

The Sanchez at-bat was just stunning, though. Watched two big strikes. Watched a ball. Swung at a ball two feet off the lower, outside corner. Okay then, and thanks for playing. Or not.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Looks like Velazquez is going in.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Gleyber VERY lucky he wasn't called out on strikes.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Is it possible to DFA ICS *during* the game?

ranger_lp said...

FYI...Jets win in OT vs. Tenn....

HoraceClarke67 said...

Rizzo got his pitch...and popped it up. O-kay.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Urshela back out there. Hmm...

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Wow!

HoraceClarke67 said...

Ji-man Choi up. Ought-oh.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Yep. And of course, Green gives up on him and Choi hits the inside pitch.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Rut-ro rorge!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Good news is the Senators are up 5-1 over the carmines.

Doug K's KAOS hope is alive!

JM said...

Jays will win. Boston, Seattle could both lose.

Whee.

TheWinWarblist said...

Let's count up how many hits the Our 2021 Suckees have today.

One!

That is all.

HoraceClarke67 said...

We give Boone his props. Green was about to give it up—he gave him the hook. Green, again, with his patented 0-2 gopher ball a couple batters before: hit so hard it drove Judge back. But we got lucky on that, and Boone didn't wait to see if he'd have to get lucky again.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Arggh! That was Stanton's pitch. He missed it.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Joey hits one out and all is forgiven.

13bit said...

Years ago, when the dark days started, I began to refer to Brian's Yankees as "Los Vaselinos" and I stand by that moniker.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Oh, fuck, just bunt again!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

That's game.

JM said...

And Sanchez can't gray it.

Of course.

13bit said...

Charles Manson cleans his cell and all is forgiven.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Sancho just putting on a show today.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Anyone else think Higgy would've had it?

JM said...

Can't grab it.

JM said...

Boone is an idiot.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Now, an aroused Sanchez, shaken from his usual slumber, will do everything he can to compound his flub with a bad throw somewhere.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Actually, I think Boone's been having a pretty good game today.

And...Sanchez with an awful throw to second.

I hate that guy.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Billy Martin would be out pulling ICS right now.

TheWinWarblist said...

The Master: I can't remember the last time the Yankees threw out a runner.

HoraceClarke67 said...

And more hustle from Arozarena...

JM said...

Big deal. We have guys who are that fast.

Oh, they're on the bench.

Leinstery said...

Don't even show up to the game tomorrow. Slap dick team. They strolled into this thinking the Rays were going to roll over and die because they had nothing to play for. Newsflash, the Rays hate you guys and embarrassing you in this fashion is second only to winning the World Series.

I hate everything about this team. Lose out in embarrassing fashion and maybe we'll see some change. Although Hal and Coops are Patroclus and Achilles so I won't get my hopes up.

HoraceClarke67 said...

I predict Sanchez passed ball, coming up.

TheWinWarblist said...

Why aren't they walking Cruz?

13bit said...

Sox and Mariners losing - although anything can happen. And Blue Jays gonna win unless a meteorite hits.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Passed ball will score the only run this game.

mik said...

This is painful. As a fan I want desperately to win this game. Also as a fan I do not believe they have the stuff to make a deep-run in the playoff.

But how can a team, in this MUST WIN game, come up with ONE hit. Uno.

--- As a side not Gary's one attribute, according to all so called experts, is his trowing arm. Well he just let the go-ahead run steal second. You can't make this stuff up.

TB must wonder what the hell we do with all the money we spend on payroll. It don't win us games.

Platoni said...

This is how many steals this series on Sanchez?

TheWinWarblist said...

I am going to start rooting for the Rays. I can't take anymore of Our 2021 Suckees. I cannot. Years of steadfast fandom through some awful years along with the great years. And Steinbrenner puts this garbage out there. He's pissing all over all of us, the franchise and the Yankees history.

Fuck him.

HoraceClarke67 said...

JOHNNY LASAGNA!

JM said...

Nice work by Sanchez. Nice job by Lasagna.

Nice.

JM said...

Oh, Rufus. You kidder.

JM said...

D-Rob!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

I hoping for a classic DRob game. Walk the first two batters.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Can they pinch hit for ICS please?

HoraceClarke67 said...

Houdini in. And Franco continues to look ridiculously good. Also, Gio openly limping.

JM said...

I guess we lose in extra innings.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

I think the best we can hope for is a fight in the tampon dugout between innings and a few injuries resulting.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Yep. Takes strike one.

And a long foul. Just when he was about to go into his home run strut.

JM said...

He isn't swinging at bad pitches. Wtf?

HoraceClarke67 said...

Hold the phone. Here's Chapo. ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Bonehead sucks.

Abelard said...

Season now hangs on Chappy.

mik said...

Putting old 54 in the game with the season on the line!!

----OH BOY...

-----------What could go wrong??

HoraceClarke67 said...

Uh, boy. It's Choi.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Chapo coming in for his specialty.

Staring stupidly as the winning run comes around.

HoraceClarke67 said...

To think that Goose Gossage used to wear that number.

HoraceClarke67 said...

That's not fair, Rufus!

What about, "Smirking strangely as the winning run comes around"?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

carmines just scored

JM said...

Squid is in, but we need Wade instead of Odor.

I guess he's being saved to pinch run for a guy we never get on base

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Hoss,

I'll go with that.

Of course if he gets the next two outs, I'll take it back for the next 24 hrs.

JM said...

If we get there, Sevvy can come in for extras.

mik said...

"Smirking strangely as the winning run comes around"?

That comment is hilarious! A good way to break up this tension.

------------ Let's hope we don't see that smirk anytime soon!

HoraceClarke67 said...

Fuck. A walk.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Smart move by the percentages to pinch-hit for Kiermaier—but not by the strange, mystic hold Kiermaier seems to have on us.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Carmines tied.

ooooooooooooh, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!

HoraceClarke67 said...

Got a break there. Now nothing stupid.

HoraceClarke67 said...

And the runner steals second without even a throw. Way to pay attention, Chapo, team.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

"The Yankees never throw out a runner"

HoraceClarke67 said...

Another break—but we'll take it!

All right.

Nine innings, no runs allowed by our pitching staff. They did their job.

mik said...

John is losing his mind that the Yankees have NO ABILITY to stop base runners advancing at will. I don't blame him. But Gary has that so called cannon for an arm. I think it is more of a slightly used sling shot.

HoraceClarke67 said...

I can't blame Sanchez for the steal. But that's the kind of thing a truly alert, smart team is looking for—and has Chapo throw over.

HoraceClarke67 said...

All right, this IS a virtual concession by the Rays. They're putting in a pitcher with a 5.02 ERA, who the Yanks have seen this series.

C'MON!

HoraceClarke67 said...

Ha! Somehow, Kiermaier would've caught that ball. Told ya!

Again, though, the inanity of all stats baseball. The Yankees literally need one run to get to the postseason, and they still don't have Odor bunting or pushing a ball against the shift.

HoraceClarke67 said...

WHAT???

Gleyber bunting? With their fastest runner on base?

STEAL first, then bunt! Though since Torres has probably not bunted in his life....

HoraceClarke67 said...

Warning track power. But it got the job done.

JM said...

Wade stopped at third.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

I'll take a wild pitch right now. I have no shame.

JM said...

Judge intentional walk.

Fly ball wins it.

JM said...

They're pitching to Judge.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Nevin held him up, then waved him on—nice job!

But you know, the throw was up the line, and Zunnino might possibly have been able tag Wade as he went by.

HoraceClarke67 said...

With them pitching to Judge, it's great that Rizzo went to second.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Judge will walk, then we'll have the Stanton patented GIDP

HoraceClarke67 said...

Urrggggghhhh!

JM said...

We win!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JM said...

Wade too fucking fast

HoraceClarke67 said...

Wow! Closer than I would've liked. But got the job done!

BernBabyBern said...

Holy shit, they actually made it.

TheWinWarblist said...

The Master: THUUHH-UUH-UUH-UUH-UUH-uuhhuuhuuhuuhuuuhuuuh Yankees win!!

TheWinWarblist said...

Why did they pitch to Judge?

JM said...

149 runs total.

JM said...

92 wins, right?

BernBabyBern said...

Pitching to Judge was the Rays saying, "Fuck you, we'll beat your best guy."

That kind of backfired on them.

JM said...

Platoni wins the challenge!

HoraceClarke67 said...

Amazing job by the staff.

mik said...

Here comes the JUDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL RISE

HoraceClarke67 said...

Well, if they walk Judge, all we need is a flyball from Stanton, so maybe that.

But hey, nice win!

C'mon, Nats!

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Now, we need the Senators to pull out their game.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Your moment of bliss:

Francisco Lindor quote:

"I'm looking forward to what happens with the Mets franchise this off-season."

Well, chances are, Francisco, they'll sign another noodnik like you.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

aaah, Mets.

No matter how low we get, we'll always have Mets.

Ken of Brooklyn said...

Longest winwarble I'ver heard from The Master all year, whoop whoop!
Cmon Nats!

Though, aren't the Yankees playing the WC in order to make it to the playoff??? not sure I agree that we're in just yet,,,,

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Fuck, Carmines just scored two

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Ken,

It's another one of those silly MLBisms. Play-in game is postseason but not playoffs.

I passed quantum mechanics but don't understand the difference.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Also, you strike out Judge, you can then walk Stanton...and have Gallo up with the bases loaded and two out. Which would have led to us tearing out our own brains and hurling them at the screen.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Damn! Was hoping the Sox would have to play a play-in, play-in game against the BJs, then come to Yankee Stadium.

But at least Toronto is out of it.

HoraceClarke67 said...

Jack Curry telling us that he still thinks it would have been "a logical and rational decision" to pitch Cole on short rest today.

Ah, baseball think!

Cole on short rest is not Cole. Chances are he gets rocked by the highest scoring team in baseball (the Rays). Then we have another game we have to win, and no Cole.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Hoss,

Curry is just trying to make people talk.

Cole better be on his game Tuesday.

And Boone better not be Boone.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

All-star Joey Callo finished the season at .199

Another example of what's wrong with MLB.
