Drunk Blog Continues: Could Benintendi be the new Jacoby?

In other words, a Redsock double agent?

He must prove his true, unabashed fealty... TONIGHT!

Is he getting here that fast?

Oh, of course. The Royals are at the Stadium.

Here's why I don't mind this move a bit:

Benintendi, 28, has hit .321/.387/.398 (111-for-347) with 40R, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 3HR, 39RBI and 4SB in 93 games this season with Kansas City. The 2022 American League All-Star entered Wednesday ranking second in the Majors in multi-hit games (34, first in the AL), fifth in batting average (third in the AL), tied for seventh in hits (tied for second in AL) and eighth in on-base percentage (fifth in the AL).

The left-handed hitter has reached base in 31 of his last 33 games with an at-bat since June 14, batting .360/.430/.416 (45-for-125) with 19R, 4 doubles, 1HR, 17RBI, 16BB and 4SB in that span. Over that stretch, Benintendi leads the AL and ranks third in the Majors in on-base percentage and ranks second in the AL and fourth in the Majors in batting average.

He has also hit safely in 19 of his last 22 starts (since June 27), batting .398/.457/.434 (33-for-83) with 12R, 3 doubles, 14RBI, 10BB and 3SB in that span.

The 2021 Gold Glove Award winner has made 89 starts in left field this year and has not made an error in 164 total chances. His 40 outfield assists since 2017 are tied for the fourth-most in the Majors in that span.

So long as his knees hold up until after we win the World Series - I'm fine with the move.

Then he can have off season replacements and/or repairs.

Alternatively we can package him up with some other prospects and get Soto.

Either way I'm fine.

Also - as a reminder . . . .

Stop fighting kids or we'll turn this car around and there'll be no ice cream!

Stang said...

A sentimental choice. Now the Yankees and their old foe Benintendi can regress to their means together.

We'll probably hear something about Joey Whiffs today...

Is it wrong that I didn’t watch a single second of last night’s game, and was glad this morning that I hadn’t?

Not that excited for Benitendi. Of course he’s an upgrade over Gallo, but that is the lowest of low bars to clear.
Myself, I’d have preferred an expanded trade for Happ and Robertson from the Cubs. Getting Benitendi is a small step.
Andujar was so happy to hear this he cracked a 3-run HR in SWB last night. As I said from the first, we never had any intention of
going after Soto. The next step will likely be RP, but we will have to over pay for that since the market is limited. Then we will look at SP. I think they’ll make a serious run at Castillo, but the Reds will absolutely bend us over and pluck at least one of our “big 3” prospects plus other prospects. I wouldn’t discount a surprise move for someone like Joc Pedersen or Joey Wendle.

So - we need to clear a spot on the 26 for AB, who’s it gonna be? Any other org would simply DFA Gallo if they couldn’t dump him in a trade. But somehow, I still can’t see the penurious Steinbungler doing that. Is it possible we keep both, and send LoC back to bunk with Andujar and Florial in SWB?

JM, I agree with you

what was that great line in the movies, 'I'LL HAVE WHAT SHE HAS.", or something like that.

Any thoughts on Sterling's HR call?

Jacked by Benni

Too dated?

Benni jets it outta here?

HoraceClarke66 said...

I agree with the new, improved 999.

Beni is better than Joey, sure. But really: we should be very very very very very very very very suspicious of a guy who has bad gams, has lost his power swing, and can't steal bases at just 28.

He ain't the answer—and frankly, he ain't anything we didn't already have in house, maybe less.

Joe of AZ said...

He hits.... It's like having a lefty handed DJ ... Clutch hits Is what was missing in the series against the Astros not another swing and miss homer/rbi/K guy like soto,Rizzo,Stanton etc....

I think him and Castillo would give us the edge to get to WS.... Prolly won't have prospects till 2058 tho :(

Interesting bookkeeping move...

07/27/22 New York Yankees reassigned LF Andrew Benintendi to the minor leagues.
07/27/22 RHP Shane Greene elected free agency.

The Hammer of God said...

As someone (I think it was ranger_lp, but I'm too lazy to check) astutely pointed out in another thread, the timing of this is very suspicious for nickel and dime Yankee bullshit. Here are what I believe to be the three biggest reasons (in Brain Cashman's head) for getting Bend-tend-i:

1. He is already here with the Royals, so we don't need to wait for him to pack a suitcase and sell or rent out his house/apartment.

2. He can walk over from the opposing locker room; no need to pay air fare or cab.

3. He has bad wheels, so it's just a matter of time before he is injured and completely unable to play. Then his salary becomes a tax writeoff. And his injury can be a valuable excuse for not making the playoffs/losing the playoffs/losing the WS.

4. We just got SWEPT by the cross-town Mutts, so this move covers up a lot of bad press. Angry Yankee fans will be somewhat appeased and assuaged.

In those respects, it is a GENIUS move by our resident moron GM.

The Hammer of God said...

I still don't think Joey Gallows will be moved out. I'll believe that when I see it. The Brain probably considers Gallows insurance, in case they cannot re-sign Judge. And also as a negotiating ploy against Judge: "If you don't sign on this here dotted line, we'll give right field to Gallows. He'll be here for the next ten years for $12 mill a year."

JM said...

I do think Gallo is going. Padres or maybe Oakland. Somewhere...

Beni is good. He hits. He's batting .320, fer chrissakes. I don't want a base stealer or power hitter. I want a hitter and he is one.

Cashman ain't finished. I think we get a starter and bullpen help by the end of the week.

BTR999 said...

I’m finding this one hard to believe and it leaked pre-Benitendi. (I’m not a rumor mill guy)
But just for shits and giggles:

Jeff Passan, speaking on 98.7 ESPN NY:

"Sources have confirmed to me that the Yankees have a massive offer on the table for Juan Soto in exchange for five of New York's top-10 prospects and 2B Gleyber Torres. To this point, Washington hasn't gotten a better deal."

Stang said...

"Jacked by Benni. Too dated?"

Doug, no reference is too dated for The Master.

HoraceClarke66 said...

All for keeping the rumor mills grinding, 999. Blind hope is what keeps us going.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Oh, and no need to worry about The Master's calls, as Benintendi doesn't hit home runs.

Doug K. said...

Hoss,

He did against us. :) Plus, Short Porch

The Hammer of God said...

Benintendi bends one into the stands: "sorry, skip, but I intended to hit a single"! And the Yankees win, thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh Yankees winnnnnnnnn!

Doug K. said...

"Sources have confirmed to me that the Yankees have a massive offer on the table for Juan Soto in exchange for five of New York's top-10 prospects and 2B Gleyber Torres. To this point, Washington hasn't gotten a better deal."

That would be interesting...

So DJ is our 2B?

Playoff lineup?

DJ 2B -
Judge CF
Soto LF
Rizzo 1B
Carpenter DH
Trevino C
Donaldson 3B - Meh
IKF SS
Benintendi RF?

That gives us three table setters in a row in IKF, Beni, and DJ. And a hitter behind Judge to keep pitchers honest.

Not Bad. Also, notice no Stanton. Hicks is the 4th outfielder he was meant to be.

The Hammer of God said...

Actually, let me amend my last post to: bend-tends one into the stands

The Hammer of God said...

@Doug K., Benintendi can lead off, DJ hits behind Soto.

I would offer Washington their choice of any six minor leaguers. Cuz we never develop anyone anyway. What the hell does it matter? We just need to save some for getting Castillo.

Bullpen arms: we don't need to bring in anyone's loser. Use the W's. In playoffs, our 4th, 5th and 6th starters will relieve.

HoraceClarke66 said...

I noticed, Doug K.

A couple hours ago, the Yankees' assistant to the general manager, P. Clemenza, came out to give the injury report on Stanton, which was quoted as follows:

"Oh, Giancarlo, won't see him no more."

Carl J. Weitz said...

I think Sterling will have plenty of time to come up with a home run call.

Carl J. Weitz said...

Perhaps " Andrew intended to hit one out- and he did."

Carl J. Weitz said...

BTR....I think it's just a smokescreen to convince other teams they aren't in on Castillo .

Carl J. Weitz said...

I'd take Robertson back.

BTR999 said...

Carl, who knows? Gamesmanship, rumors, and outright bullshit are all fair game at the deadline.

The roster moves continue...

07/28/22 New York Yankees activated LF Andrew Benintendi.
07/28/22 New York Yankees optioned LF Tim Locastro to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Gallows to the Padres along with a few more of the Way brothers for Clevinger. Hal pays Joey.

Benitendi shaved and leading off, wearing #18. (Johnny Damon’s #)

Gallo starting moved up to # 7 in the lineup after complimenting Boone’s haircut

The Hammer of God said...

See there, Gallo hitting 7th in lineup. I'm telling you, Gallows ain't going anywhere.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Callo shouldn't even be batting #7 in Trenton.

Hopefully they're just showcasing him.

After Gleyber's Sanchez imitation on the basepaths this week, hopefully they're showcasing him for the Soto trade (who I'm not especially excited about, but two years of control sounds nice). I'm OK with DJ and porn stache sharing 2B duties.

If they don't get Soto, DFA Callo and call up *any* of the options in PA.

13bit said...

you got that right, Dick. "at the mercy of morons..."

DickAllen said...

I'm trying to imagine what they might be showcasing him for Rufus.

Outdoor air conditioning specialist?

Rug beating expert?

DickAllen said...

I know: he's auditioning for a shocker/horror film. Little does he know he's already got the part.

Gallo is inexplicable. Boone is an idiot.
