Ohtani Alert

Happened to flick over to the Mets channel during a break last night, just in time to hear Gary Cohen—actually, one of the best announcers in the game—chortling over "how Yankee fans are going to react" when Shohei Ohtani is named MVP over Aaron Judge.

Sidekick Ron Darling—again, actually one of the smartest broadcasters out there—seconded that emotion, asking, "How could he [Ohtani] not [be named MVP]? He does everything?"

Well, in truth, Gary and Ron...he doesn't.

The DH-pitcher who GQ informed us "made baseball fun again"—not to mention sweater vests—still has yet to pitch his first complete game, or field a ball at any position save on the mound.

The New Babe Ruth is batting all of .257 this year, for his fourth-place team going nowhere in a weak division.

The Ohtani hyperbole wagon got rolling again because, after your New York Yankees cuffed him all around the Big A on June 2, he has turned in 5 straight, excellent starts, enough to have the Cohens, Darlings, and basketball fans at ESPN all a-swoon.

Don't believe the hype.

Of those 5 great starts, 1 was against Boston (thank you, Mr. Ohtani).

The others...?

They were against Seattle, KC, the ChiSox, and Miami.

What's more, Ohtani is now being pitched with at least 6 days, and almost always a solid week, between mound appearances.

Well, just trying to save a young arm, right?

Or...is this part of the spinmeisters' campaign in the front offices of the Angels and MLB, to further hype the Man Who Would Be The Babe?

Somehow, Ohtani, the man who does it all, managed to NOT pitch in this same stretch against the Astros, Dodgers, and Mets—all of whom he COULD have started against with regular rest.

What makes me think that the Angels' wunderkind won't be throwing against a hard-hitting team for the rest of the season?

This is how baseball—really, MLB—operates these days. Desperately lacking confidence in its own game, it would rather manufacture stars, endlessly expand the playoffs, fill the sport with gimmicks, and turn a blind eye to rampant cheating, than just put the best against the best out there.

I think we need to start a counter-campaign to the one the Lords of Baseball have rolled out.  To win the MVP, Ohtani must at least pitch against the tough teams, too.

If someone's going to take the MVP from Judge this year I'd bet on another Houston player doing the honors.

Yordan Álvarez
.312/.410/.665 (1.076 OPS)

Aaron Judge
.287/.366/.627 (.993 OPS)

Hoss,

Since sarcasm doesn't always travel well on the interwebs, and I am getting a little slower reading electrons -- I can only hope your comments on the mutts announcers was heavily sarcastic. (Darling dropping off the face of the planet would be a huge net positive)

Otherwise, seek professional help before it is too late.

Rufus,

Gotta tell you, the Met's broadcasts are pretty good. Probably better than ours. Here are three reasons...

1) Their graphics package is vastly superior. Easier to read. Brighter colors. Better design.

2) Their announcers are focused on the game. This as opposed to employing fake jocularity to make each other laugh. (David Cone excepted.)

3) No Carlos Beltran or anyone remotely like him. No sprouting of platitudes. No repeating what the other guys just said. No mastermind behind the Astros cheating.... You know, that kind of stuff.

---

As an aside: After watching a few games on YES without Michael Kay I've come to the conclusion that the problem is actually him.

Paulie (who I was not fond of) is a MUCH better color man when paired with Ryan Ruocco and can just do the job without pandering to Kay's ego.

Ohtani is likely a better pitcher than hitter, but because he insists on playing both positions, he's made himself a cause celebre for the hype machine.

The fact that he's not great at either role doesn't seem to matter. His "value" is based solely on the fact that he's playing in both roles.

The 6-day rest thing is something that he brought with him from Japan, where 6 days between starts is supposedly the norm. So it's what he's used to and comfortable with.

It's all bullshit. Though if he concentrating on pitching alone, he'd probably be pretty good. Maybe good enough to throw against good, playoff-caliber teams.

Really pisses me off that so many baseball commentators, announcers, and reporters have fallen for this myth.

As if on cue, MLB had their talking heads pushing Ohtani and Alvarez for MVP last hour.

Darling was one of them. I can't stand him because he is *so* anti-Yankee on the national broadcasts. Sorry, we're just going to have to disagree on him.

Whenever I think of Ron Darling (which is close to never - so thanks everyone for the overload) I think of the ginormous "actor" who shared his character in Shallow Hal - Joshua Shintani).

BE WICKED NASTY!!!

Judge at DH

Carpenter in LF

Stanton rests (at Fenway)

hmmmm

JM said...

I wonder if Judge hits over 60 home runs....will the haters actually admit he should be MVP? I wonder.

AboveAverage said...

JM - I think that they would have to.

Either that I would be angry at each and every one of them.

AboveAverage said...

I'm root, root, rooting for Judge's gastrocnemius muscles.

Duck Donaldson!!

Hicks stood and admired his shot before running. Cripes. Might've been a triple.

JM said...

Guys need to have that admiration shit pounded out of their heads.

AboveAverage said...

Yes - he should have bolted outta the box

AboveAverage said...

LETS GET WICKED'NASTY!

JM said...

But if Gallo keeps hitting I won't have anyone left to hate.

AboveAverage said...

We'll find you someone else to hate

JM said...

Thanks, man. I appreciate it.

JM said...

Hey, Nestor is sucking again.

DickAllen said...

I don't know JM. This schoolyard of a ballpark really sucks. John and Suzyn were remarking how difficult it is for a lefty to pitch here. Casey wouldn't let Whitey Ford pitch here. Can you imagine?

DickAllen said...

On the other hand, maybe you can get a head start hating Nestor

AboveAverage said...

There goes all my comments again - WHO IS THE SECRET COMMENT REMOVER?

JM said...

Too hard to hate Nestor. Well, there's always Castro, I guess.

AboveAverage said...

It appears that J-Twitch will continue to inspire your hate

TheWinWarblist said...

Even when he does something good, Gallo is still a moron.

DickAllen said...

Yeah, JM, Gallo is not off the hook yet

AboveAverage said...

JM - how's the hate for Gallo going?

JM said...

I'm not hating him. Lucky? Kinda. But I'm glad he went for the inside the parker.

JM said...

I'm a homer. I would love to see Gallo get hot like Hicks. He's suffered enough.

DickAllen said...

It's amazing his pants didn't fall down rounding third.

Your compassion for that big turd is admirable.

JM said...

I'm a softie at heart.

Le Carp!!

DickAllen said...

A beautiful sentiment: "How can you say no to the New York Yankees?"

JM said...

Sox look like schmucks.

JM said...

AA, that happened to me a couple times. I have no idea.

DickAllen said...

JM, the Sux ARE schmucks. It’s hard to believe this team has sunk so low.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Just got back from dinner. Never thought I would miss hearing the sux broadcast, but I do for the last four innings.

DickAllen said...

It has been a thing of beauty Rufus

JM said...

Two home runs. Not great. It is Fenway. Even Brigadoon gets a double.

JM said...

Nestor again is being figured out. The league has caught up to him and he hasn't been able to adjust yet.

Doug K. said...

This game is wild!

JM said...

Funny how Devers kills Cole but Nestor owns him.

JM said...

Nestor out and not even four. With a five run lead. Fenway.

DickAllen said...

Her comes Castro. Hate candidate JM?

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Q: Who would you rather see in a pinch?

Castro or Chapo?

A: ryne duren

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Dick, I see your posts being deleted also. Same as AA

I blame google's double secret (two factor authorization) probation.

JM said...

I don't like Castro. That's a fact.

JM said...

But Fidel did get out of it.

Or maybe it’s that fucking Red Sox podcast I keep hearing

I'd like to personally thank Nasty Nestor, JM and DickAllen for tonight's win. Without them we might have been stuck in a Honey Bucket until the end of days. Read this post FAST Ladies (and Gentlemen) 'cause it will be slaughtered and tossed into the boneyard within seconds.

Has anyone caught the new name of the Sweeney Murti post game? It’s like the “Local IBS Lady 69 Post Blown Out Game Show”. Or something like that. It’s a really bad name whatever it is.

Nestor may have had a short outing, but he broke Devers. Well done.

I am thankful Nestor broke Devers. That was his job today. He was magnificent !

Now remove my post please. DO IT NOW!

I noticed that Refsnyder never backed up Arroyo on Gallo's fly ball. Hell, I don't believe that he even moved, and no help from either the first or second basemen. No comment from Cone, surprisingly. When Arroyo came into the dugout he was totally PISSED, but again Cone seemed to shy away from talking about the "real" reason. The Sux are finished. They have that same head up their asses look about them that the Yankees had the last couple of years.

Almost all of my baseball viewing over the past few years is spent on the Yankees. Has critical announcing of games been taken out of broadcasts?

Stang said...

I have no idea why any comments are disappearing. I don't think anyones deliberately removing them; the Google gremlins might be acting up.
