New Yankee tradition: Soul-shattering loss on the day they honor outgoing hero

Three hits. Three stinking hits.

Two unearned runs. Two stinking unearned runs.

Jeter's old friends showed up. Too bad his teammates didn't.

Remember last year's Mariano Rivera Day? I didn't think the Yankee organization could embarrass itself in a more mind-numbing way than when they "honored" Mo by blowing the game against San Francisco, ending his last chance at playing in the post-season.

Today, the Yankees effectively put the kibosh on Jeter's post-season chances, although - hey, let's be honest here - this team hasn't been out of it for a month.

Clearly, we underestimated the relentless mediocrity of this remarkable configuration of pure Yankee lard. They are as bad as any Yankee team that ever included the likes of Horace Clarke or Matt Nokes, and the franchise this season made no moves - none whatsoever - with next year in mind.

The real difference between the 2014 and 1985 Yankees is that this time, the owner is a billionaire - rather than a mere multi-millionaire. Thus, he cannot suffer financially, due to losing seasons. That means the only hassles he'd face would be in replacing the hired help, because a few might become disgruntled and badmouth him, and it would be oh-soooo unpleasant.

The Giants play tomorrow night. I'm thinking of changing the name of the blog to "IT IS HIGH, IT IS FAR, IT IS intercepted." Are you with me?

I blame the Yankees' demise on this useless, self-indulgent blog.

The clock is finally ticking down, I've never wished for a Yankee loss, but at this point, any win is just prolonging the misery.

And the only thing that brought me any joy this season has been this self indulgent blog,,,, BLESS YOU El Duque!

In a season of ankle deep crap, this blog has provided me with a case of handi wipes to wipe away the dreck and make me smile!!

And what about the Capn's oratory--sheer weightless programmed robotics. There wasn't a wet eye in the house.

have to agree with Ken. Thank you, Duque, for increasing my enjoyment of the 2014 season. It was not a small task, my friend.

thanks to everyone else too. I love you guys, even the always annoying (and occasionally insightful) anonymouse.

Hey, that 1985 team won 97 games and missed out on the playoffs to the Blue Jays by 2 games....they'd have made the post season if there were a wild card..

Now, 1987-1992 is looking more like this team.

Anyway, I love this site and the work you guys do.
