The volcano rumbles, as Tyler Austin faces the Abyss

Like many on this godforsaken blog, I instinctively loathed the late-winter signing of utility infielder Neil Walker. It was another case of the Retrieval Empire at its grubbiest, scrounging up yet another tired veteran from the scrap heap, once again at the expense of youth.

Walker's arrival directly threatened the playing time of three "Baby Bombers:" Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar, Tyler Wade, along with a slush pile of fellow travelers (Jace Peterson, Danny Espinosa, even Brandon Drury) whom the Yankees had assembled to compete for 2B and 3B. He was not viewed as a big 1B option. That position belonged to Greg Bird, the avenging angel from last October.

Walker's presence quickly killed Tyler Wade's role on the Yankees. Of course, Wade didn't help himself, going 3 for 35 in April, after winning a utility job in spring training. Wade was exiled to Scranton, where - disillusioned and depressed - he has remained in a deep coal mine accident of a slump. It's possible that he will never play another inning for the Yankees, but be converted into a Bitcoin trade chip, albeit one that has lost much of its value.

Walker also started the season in a dreadful slump. One difference, though: The Yankees had no option on him. So they stuck with him, as they always do with veterans (See 2017: Matt Holliday, Chase Headley, Chris Carter, et al) until the roofs cave in. To be fair, Walker recently snapped out of his funk, just in time to avert the eviction notice. Lately, he has hit well and provided quality at bats.

And today or tomorrow, he will likely eliminate another Yankee rookie, another Tyler.

This time it's Tyler Austin, the mound-charging hero of Boston, who has 8 home runs and 23 RBIs, fifth on the team. His .238 average has been dropping - (it's still above Walker's .220) - and his on-base percentage has dwindled to .297 (same as Walker's.) This weekend, when Bird rightfully returns, Austin will almost surely be jettisoned to Scranton, where he can be expected to go 0 for the month of June and disappear into the ether of Central Pennsylvania.

Listen: I get it that Austin is the logical choice to go. The Yankees need Bird's LH bat at first base. Plus, Walker plays several positions. I get it that the problem with a loaded 25-man roster is that somebody has to miss the prom. I get it that Walker is, in fact, a smart batter who contributed some big hits during the recent winning streak. It's not about Walker.

But haven't we all been wishing for a pulled hamstring, a minor injury somewhere that would keep Austin - or Clint Frazier - on this team? Frankly, I still wish the Yankees had never signed Walker. I still believe in the rookies, and - yes, you're right, who am I?, and what the fuck do I know? - I still believe that Tyler Wade on any other team would have gotten the chance to play through his rough opening, and he would now be helping this team. Instead, we have Walker.

Like I say, this isn't about Walker. It's about hording. It's about refusing to give youngsters a chance. Tyler Austin deserves better than what is about to happen. And I believe these things take a toll on the psyche of a franchise. A baseball team is a life form, an organism unto itself. For every Yin, there is a Yang. You cannot do this to people. A bad wind is blowing in.

The Yanks have a long-time commercial relationship with Johnnie WALKER Scotch. Huge sponsor. Coincidence?

Austin doesn't deserve to be demoted, but who does? I'm not sure which of the 500 pitchers we're carrying might be sacrificial at this point in time. Certainly German might need some more seasoning, but if he goes, who starts in the five slot?

Oh, right. The guy we're going to get by trading Wade, maybe Austin, and a pack of other youngsters.

Silly me.

It's hard to believe that Boston is 17-14 (since that 17-2 run ended) -- and the Yankees are 13-and-5 for May so far -- and yet I read your words and get depressed.

I was happy b4 I read your piece. Now, I feel like I'm at Haspel Level 17.....

Our best option regarding our pitching staff is to use our mighty JuJu to conjure up more rainouts.

Duque you hit the nail on the head. It's not really about Walker because he is the smarter choice it's about what happens to a guy who is playing well and gets sent down anyway.

Take Frazier, guy comes up doubles, walks twice, was here last year, sees all bunch of young guys sticking, AnDujar, Gleybar, Bird, etc. and has the talent to play and then gets sent down after one game.

Even though Gardner is coming around Frazier is better. And I like Gardner. But Frazier's the future and should get the at at bats.

It's got to be tough emotionally on these guys. I guess it's just part of the game. So they have to suck it up, be professional, and "know" that they will be back. At least that's what they tell their Moms.

But here's the thing... sports, as opposed to pretty much every other profession, is a meritocracy. Hal's son doesn't get to play for the Yankees. Conversely, some kid from the DR whose first glove was a shoe box does.

Eventually Frazier replaces Gardner. Austin vs. Walker? It's Walker for the reasons you stated. He has more merit. Doesn't make it easy. I feel bad for the guy and I'm sure he get's to come back at some point. Of course, that means something bad like an injury - my money is on Bird. But right now it's Walker.

Last thing, If they make a trade for a pitcher at least the guys they trade will get a chance. It's great to be a Yankee but it's also great to be in MLB wherever they end up. The pitcher they trade for get's to be a Yankee. It's a zero sum game. Win-Win you really think about it.

Pin-striped prospects makes a rare good point (albeit with horrible (no) editing).

Austin has a higher home run rate than Bird. Austin's drop-off against righties is even not too bad.

Leave Bird in Scranton (assuming he still has options) until he is so on fire, that they are forced to DFA Walker (or trade him if he's still hitting fairly well). In the meantime Bird can prove he can last more than a month without being injured.

The Yankees should sign him, just to make him get a shave and a hair cut, then release him.

Alphonso said...

I have not heard the Yankees explain the rules which demands that Bird be promoted, despite a .200 BA. Is it some arcane requirement, once a guy's formal time on the DL expires?

Otherwise, I am with Rufus.

Let him stay in Scranton and show some toughness; physical ( can he last an entire week?) and emotional ( " I deserve to be on the big club", etc ). His good fortune is someone else's bad fortune, and he should pay a price.

I would rather trade Walker, and re-trade Drury for a pitcher.

Leave me red thunder.

P.S. I have, from before the days when Clint cut his hair, believed that the Yankees would never see him as a regular member of the team. I have always felt that he would be traded, and that trade would be the "second coming of the Jay Buhner debacle trade."

I have built a funeral pyre on the banks of the Euphrates River for that day.

Walker needs to take a hike when Bird flies in.

In other news what's up with weak teams inventing random reasons for not staring down the freight train AKA Yanks offense(mostly).

Maybe we could use the hair and shavings in a mighty JuJu to create a number 3 starter or lights out long reliever? Won't be able to make a hitter out of them, that's for sure.

The hated Red Sox figured out a novel way of making room on their roster.

Anonymous said...

Hanley Ramirez's performance in 2018 has been superior to Neil Walker's in every respect: overall batting stats, WAR, you name it. Yet the Red Sox have the good sense to dump Ramirez while the Yankees cling to Walker, who is the worst--or almost worst--qualifying player in the American league based on WAR rankings.

This is the difference between a shrewd front office and a diseased, moronic front office. Guess which is which?

Anonymous said...

I'm really surprised--or maybe not so surprised--to see duque parrotting Gammonite babble about Walker's recent spate of "big hits," his defensive versatility, his left-handed bat, etc.

Let's take these points in order:

1. Walker's "big hits" constitute a tiny sample of plate appearances. The big picture is that with nearly one third of the season elapsed, he is at the bottom of AL qualifying players by WAR metrics--a total bust on offense and defense, at MINUS .4 WAR. A complete disaster--far worse than Hanley Ramirez, who was wisely DFA'ed by the far shrewder people running things in Boston.
2. For infield defensive backup, you already have Little Toe. With thirteen pitchers in the bullpen, how many redundant infield backups do you need at shortstop, second, and third? Austin should be the alternate at first, period. He's the superior choice to Walker in every respect.
3. Left-handed bat--this one really takes the cake. The guy has abysmal numbers from both sides of the plate, so how does it make any difference whether he swings the bat from the right or left side of the plate or standing in the middle? Do tell, duque.

Your argument for keeping Walker is a bust, like Walker himself. I'm surprised to see you collapsing into the lowest-common-denominator conventional wisdom on this one.

So stats anon agrees with me. It must be the Johnnie Walker Scotch angle. Nothing else quite explains his persistent presence.

Anonymous said...

Stats Anon - I could be wrong in this but my recollection is that in addition to missing a good chunk of spring training Walker is a notorious slow starter so his BA and WAR and all of the other measures of his value skew negatively at this point. His real value to the team going forward could be measured starting in May. How does he rank from that point on?

That said, I always thought that Drury would end up as the fabled Golden Zobrist" for this team. I have no great love for Walker. Just was wondering if the stats as presented tell the whole story.

Doug K.

Anonymous said...

First of all, Doug K, let's settle this canard once and for all. EVERYONE on this blog refers to stats. That's not the issue--that's a red herring raised by philistines who are too lazy to read anything about sabremetrics. The issue is WHICH stats--not stats or no stats.

Second, YOU are among the lazy. All you have to do is go to Baseball-Reference.com, look up Walker's splits for any year you care to choose, scroll down to his monthly splits, and you will see that he is NOT a consistently slow starter.

So stop pulling stuff out of your ass and get serious, OK?

Doug K.--The blog is fun for you? I'll tell you whose posts are fun for ME--Alphonso's and duque's--Alphonso's because he's a wild creative madman, a niche genius, and duque because he's a consistently thoughtful analyst and beautiful prose stylist and first-rate wit. But reading lazy babble from people like you is not fun for ME. You should care about making the blog fun for everyone--not just yourself. You want to venture a line of argument? Then please do your homework and back it up with some data--not just your worthless vague impressions. That's just a waste of bandwidth and time. That's my opinion.

And stop whining. Some people find it fun to tweak and be tweaked. The whole thing is a put-on, you know.

One more point for you, Doug K.--every time I post something in a matter-of-fact way, I get baited. Calling me "Stat Anon," as you did, is a form of baiting. So it elicits a return volley from me. YOU are contributing to the acrimony with that kind of baiting. I am NOT "Stat Anon"--I am just "anon." I do NOT use stats any more than anyone else out here--I just use them in a different way. So when you decide to part company with the wolf pack and communicate in a nonabrasive, noncontentious way, people will respond to you in kind.

Hey Tough Guy Anon--

You think your periodic spews of dementia are going to deter me out here? Quite the opposite--every tinme you post, I vow to post at least FIVE comments in return, just to spite your sorry ass.

You speak of "fun." You think the psychopathic vomit you spew all over this blog is "fun"? Really? That's your idea of fun, you sick fuck? Others, including me, make repeated substantive contributions ON THE TOPIC OF THE BLOG. You never do. You're just an Internet vampire, compulsively sniffing out sources of blood sport. You're jealous of people who can write coherently, and on subjects other than your own roiling, deranged furies at strangers on the Internet. That's your only topic, your animating obsession.

You're not opposed to insults in general--you heartily endorse and join in on the insults directed at anyone who mentions sabremetrics, because you, like your handful of damaged cohorts, have a visceral hatred of advanced baseball analytics and spin into a murderous
dementia at the mere mention of WAR and FIP--as attested to by your pre-adolescent slinging of the epithet "Statboy," so beloved of baseball philistines and assholes like you the world over. You're a walking cliche, a contemptible pack animal, a snarling, foaming dog. Not even close to a human being.

YOU are the one hurling shit from the sidelines, asshole, along with three or four other sociopaths like you who NEVER POST AT ALL except to vomit bile from the depths of your diseased psyche. That is your sole presence here, your only reason for posting. You never post about baseball or anything else because YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE YANKEES OR BASEBALL. You're just a sick, isolated little pup trolling this site for desperately needed opportunities to spew venom. YOU ARE EVIL.

I picture you as an emaciated reject whose main form of sexual stimulation is trawling past vidoes of the Westminster Dog Show.

Now--if you want public revelations of identities, lead the way, dog lover. I'll be glad to drop you off at the emergency room after our encounter.

Yes--this site needs a log-in. I quite agree--to deter compulsive malicious flame artsts like Rufus T. Shitfly, Killer/Drunk Doc Warblist, LBJ, and Anon Tough Guy. Those four people alone, with their psychopathic antipathy to sabremetrics--their imbecilic ferocity about the use of categories of analysis that now dominate every baseball front office, even the Yankees--THOSE four people are the source of all the conflict and acrimony on this site, with occasional sideline yelps from junior members of the Hate Club like KD and Doug K.

That's it--four damaged, evil obsessives are making a hash of this site. I'm not going to let them steamroll everyone else to slake their thirst for an Internet power rush. I'm going to see them and raise them until they shut the fuck up and let people have friendly discussions of BASEBALL out here in any way they please.

In the meantime, let them all die of strokes in their malicious lust to prevent me and others from attempting to do carry on with their own baseball reflections as they see fit.

"Statboy" that, assholes.

Now . . . having disposed of some trash, I can return to the subject of baseball.

I think--HOPE!--that the timing of Boston's DFA'ing of Hanley Ramirez is providential for the Yankees. It might just help Cashman form a little lump of courage, just big enough to inspire him to acknowledge that Walker is a stiff, that acquiring him was a mistake, and that this would be a good opportunity to dump one of the worst players in baseball.
