Yankeetorial: Would Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran make any difference?

The more I read about this winter's free agent landscape, the more Grinchy I feel. How is it that the Yankees have America's most valuable sports franchise, yet the Dodgers have far more money to spend? (And this has nothing to do with our self-imposed salary cap.) Now Texas, with its new cable deal, is quadrupling its TV income.  Both teams could outbid us for Tanaka - or anybody. In fact, the Dodgers' apparent reluctance to go after Robbie Cano looks suspiciously like a gentleman's club agreement.

But at the end, this wretched winter comes from what appear to be our two main targets, according to the press: Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran.

Meh and Double Meh.

McCann is a 30-year-old catcher who wants a four or five-year deal; he doesn't hit for average and his workload behind the plate drops every year. Theoretically, our best prospects - what few we have - are catchers. Are we just going to trade them? Because folks, that's 1985 in a nutshell. I appreciate the need for a solid catcher, but this guy - at the cost of our draft pick? Am I missing something?

And then there is Beltran. He's 38. Are we seriously wanting to stick ourselves with a three year deal on another outfielder DH? Because at a certain point, they all become Anduw Jones. We've already got Vernon Wells and Ichiro clogging our arteries. Do we have to sign every geezer who comes our way? And... another draft pick gone.

Listen: I accept that the Yankee scouts know more than I do about the quality of players. The fear I have, though, is that the owners truly believe that, under the current operating agreement, the Yankees can win every year. The Redsocks spent an entire season to rebuild. (You could argue they spent two.) They cleaned house. At some point, we will have to do the same.

Last year, we all knew a Yankee collapse was imminent. But right now, I'm looking at the plans being put forth and thinking that this will be a far worse year - a hideous, Mel Hall/Matt Nokes era-worthy meltdown, where we lose New York to the Mets, and we're screaming at each other throughout September. I thought last year was depressing, because we weren't going to spend. Now, I see us spending and spending and spending... and getting nowhere. Sorry to be so negative. But am I missing something? Are Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran going to save this team?

We HAVE to do business in Gentleman's Clubs, OK? A-Rod won't meet anywhere else.

I beg to disagree. It's very obvious that Duque and Alphonso and Mustang all know more about players than Yankee scouts. In fact, my Aunt Sadie knows more about players than Yankee scouts. In fact, my Aunt Sadie's friend 'Schnipsi' Malikowski knows more about players than Yankee scouts.

Her toy poodle, Liberace, was once approached about becoming a Yankee scout. That should tell you something.

John M has identified the problem. The Yankee scouts are dogging it.

The front office looks at Beltran and says he is only about five and a half in dog years. He's still a young retriever.

Obviously, Cano is going to flea the Yankees.
