50 Years Ago: Mantle Hits HR 35 Against Senators

mantle-35-1961
Another era in our respect for politicians. During the pre-game festivities Mantle
homers for and wins a season's pass for his "partner" Congressman Ed Dooley (see pic insert) from Mamaroneck! I wonder if Dooley had been a Dodger fan since he was born in Brooklyn in 1905.

Thanks for doing these. '61 was my dream season, and I love old box scores and the reminders of players I'd long forgotten.
This one incudes Orville Inman "Coot" Veal, who for some reason was able to play parts of 6 seasons in the majors despite a .231 career BA, 1 HR in 611 ABs, and only 2 steals in 11 attempts. He wasn't that good a fielder, either. I actually remember having Coot's baseball card.

Glad you enjoy those. My favorite year was 58. I feel the same way looking at those box scores. Notice how there are so many ex and future Yankees in them? The Senators had in that game ex Yanks Gene Woodling and Harry Bright along with future Yank Dale Long. By the way evidently someone claiming to be Coot Veal has his own site
