Del Shofner

A brief aside, in this somber moment, to mourn and pay tribute to a great from another sport, Del Shofner, one of my father's favorite Giants, dead at 85.  Here he is, catching another touchdown pass, with a wonderful glimpse of the old Stadium, as well.

Those were names to conjure with once, Y.A. Tittle and Del Shofner.  They called Shofner "Slim," and "The Blade," and he was fast and tough and elusive, cutting past one cornerback after another, a ghost on the gridiron.

Hail and farewell.

He mis-timed his jump in the NFL championship game against the Bears, and the ball went off his fingertips in the end zone. My childhood self would never forgive him. But he was a great one, and those were great Giant teams, nothing like what we have today.

I came late to sports for an American kid and missed that whole era of Giants football. Damn it.

It was a little before my time, too. My father loved those teams, though. Next-to-last book I ever bought him was on those old Giants.

You and I share many Giants heroes. We lived in the Bronx. So why did I become a Giants, then Mets fan? My die was cast.
