"Jeter" and "A-Rod" are trending on Twitter: What gives?

 It's a strange one.

It think it started when A-Rod, who was paid more than almost anybody, came out in favor of a salary cap. (He wants to own the Mets, and the other owners would have to vote him in, so he has to suck up.) Then people started insulting A-Rod on Twitter, and A-Rod partisans struck back by insulting Jeter.

Bo:
What are you smoking. Where was Choke-Rod in the Post Season. Don't give me the 2009 speech. Yes Stink-Rod did help in the Playoffs. But it Was Damon and Matsuison who were the stars. Ed

So, the best player on the Yankees was the guy who cheated, and the second-best player was also the guy who cheated.

Right.

Of course this Bo guy is right, because sports is all an imaginary, statistical construct that exists only in our minds, and not in any objective reality.

How you achieved those statistics—even if it meant cheating, lying, creating incessant distractions, and quite possibly even committing violations of federal and state laws—they don't matter.

Oh, and enhancing your incredible natural talent with PEDs...and then, still, basically not giving a damn? That doesn't cut it either.

But if you want stats, here are some:

Cano's slash line as a Yankee in the regular season: .309/.355/.504/.860
Cano's slash line as a Yankee in the postseason: .222/.267/.419/.686

A-Rod's slash line in the regular season: .295/.380/.550/.930
A-Rod's slash line in the postseason: .259/.365/.457/.822

Jeter's slash line in the regular season: .310/.377/.440/.817
Jeter's slash line in the postseason: .308/.374/.465/.838

Huh. What a surprise. Jogginson and A-Rod were dramatically worse players in the postseason. Jeter was maybe a little better—and Jeter was the guy playing WITHOUT PEDs.

Really, A-Rod and Cano had some of the very worst playoffs in Yankees history, and they had them repeatedly.

The stats above, which include 3 excellent Octobers A-Rod had with Seattle, don't reflect how truly bad he was. He had, really 4 good postseason series with the Yanks, as opposed to 10 bad to mediocre ones.

This is a joke. Jeter was one of the greatest players in the history of the game. The others were just two more cheaters.

A-fucking-men, Hoss. A-fucking-men.

Stat dudes are just an offshoot of the culture wars that have destroyed academia. Not everything can be so easily quantified.

@13bit - but didn't HC66 just prove his point with stats???
And I was around when Horace came up... along with Roy White, who was also a 2nd baseman. Roy had a good bat but a not so good glove, so they moved him to LF.

I'm not against stats. They drew me to the game in the first place, at the tender age of 8. But they are not the be-all and end-all. They have to be taken in context. And when the context is blatant cheating...

White did come up as an infielder, and got moved to left field. I'm not sure why; I don't know if he was ever given a real shot at second. But in left, he wasn't a bad outfielder. I remember he played an entire year without making an error.

But the Knights of the Press Box continually mocked him for his arm. I dunno, but I don't remember a whole bunch of cannons out in left field. Hell, F. Robby played RIGHT field with a weak arm, and nobody minded.

Roy White was a guy who, his whole career, was asked to do things above his skill set. An infielder with an infielder's arm, he was asked to play outfield. A contact hitter, he was asked to bat 4th and be a power hitter.

The whole time? He went out, without complaint, and did the best he could—and did it pretty damned well. If we had 14 Roy Whites today, and our pitching staff, we would win by 10 games.
