Suzyn is a remarkable woman to go out and sing that difficult anthem and bring chops like that. Do you think she practices and vocalizes - with her schedule? She has really good ears and makes a lovely line out of the very un-vocal tune. I especially enjoyed her dynamic contrast- which no one ever does (and I have never heard anyone else attempt) when she got to “ gave proof through the night...that our flag.....”
I loved it! She kept a good tempo, actually sang what is written, It was in tune......thats all I need. Then the Yankees undressed those stanky Redsox. Not a bad night.
Our National Anthem was taken from an old English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven"—as my 8th grade teacher told us—is always best sung well-oiled. This makes Suzyn's accomplishment all the more impressive.
It’s a damn shame there wasn’t the usual packed house for that. The stadium would have gone bananas.
I got a little misty-eyed watching that. I usually joke around here but that's the truth. All in all, between witnessing this and Toonces have his patented meltdown for the Mets, tonight was a good night.

I'm late to the party on this, but ... that was damn impressive. I'm betting there were people shaking their heads and waiting for something awful when they heard that John's companiera was singing the anthem. Maybe she can be the Robert Merrill of this decade ... bringing her out to sing in person when we need a big win.
