All-Time Yankees Tournament, Quarterfinals: We have a Final Four

As we go down to the wire, we have a few surprises and four different decades represented in the Final Four.

And the winners are ...

1932 Yankees beat 1927, 4 games to 2

1951 Yankees beat 2009, 4 games to 1

1998 Yankees beat 1936, 4 games to 3

1947 Yankees beat 1961, 4 games to 0

To find out details about each series, click below:

1932 Yankees beat 1927, 4 games to 2

Game 1: 1932 wins, 9-4
Game 2: 1927 wins, 3-2, 10 innings
Game 3: 1932 wins, 4-1
Game 4: 1932 wins, 4-1
Game 5: 1927 wins, 6-3, 10 innings
Game 6: 1932 wins, 5-3

I set things up so that teams from the same era wouldn't face off in the early rounds. When you're three rounds into a tournament, however, series like this can happen with several players suiting up for both teams. In Game 2, which went into extra innings, Wilcy Moore got the win in relief ... and also took the loss in relief. Both of 1927's wins were in extra innings, and both were won by Moore. In Game 2, the '27 team loaded the bases with nobody out and Mark Koenig ended the game with a sacrifice fly. In Game 5, meanwhile, 1927 took advantage of pair of 10th-inning errors by shortstop Doc Farrell to push across three runs, one on a sac fly by Pat Collins and two more on a single by Joe Dugan. For the series, though, the '32 pitching staff dominated '27's "Murderers Row" lineup for the most part, racking up 63 strikeouts and allowing just 35 hits in 6 games. Nobody on the '27 Yankees hit .300 (Earle Combs hit .292 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs, while Ruth had a .292-1-1 line. Lou Gehrig was 3-for-21, Tony Lazzeri 3-for-22, and Dugan was 1-for-23). For 1932, Ben Chapman was series MVP, hitting .320 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs, while Joe Sewell hit .333 and Frankie Crosetti drove in 6 runs.

1951 Yankees beat 2009, 4 games to 1

Game 1: 1951 wins, 9-5
Game 2: 2009 wins, 4-1
Game 3: 1951 wins, 3-2
Game 4, 1951 wins, 12-1
Game 5, 1951 wins, 16-4

The 2009 Yankees were an offensive juggernaut in the first two rounds, but were shut down by the 1951 Yankees in this series. Mariano Rivera, of all people, was the goat (not G.O.A.T.) of the series, losing Games 1 and 3. In Game 1, Rivera was brought in to try and get a 2-inning save, but that backfired when Rivera gave up five runs in the 8th inning, including a grand slam by No. 9 hitter Joe Collins. In Game 3, Rivera gave up a 2-run HR in the ninth to Mickey Mantle. Vic Raschi once again won 2 games (both complete games), and Gil McDougald once again was the series MVP. McDougald, who hit .421 in the second round, hit .579 this round with 3 HRs and 8 RBIs. Through two series, the 1951 McDougald is 19-for-38 with 4 HRs and 12 RBIs. Yogi Berra hit .364 with 3 HRs and 8 RBI. Alex Rodriguez hit .368 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs for the 2009 Yankees and Andy Pettitte got the team's lone win.

1998 Yankees beat 1936, 4 games to 3

Game 1: 1998 wins, 5-3
Game 2: 1936 wins, 9-3
Game 3: 1936 wins, 9-2
Game 4: 1998 wins, 3-2
Game 5: 1936 wins, 5-0
Game 6: 1998 wins, 2-1
Game 7: 1998 wins, 14-4

Once again, the 1998 Yankees had to rally from the brink of elimination to win in 7 games. In Game 1, the '98 team got 3 runs in the 8th behind a Derek Jeter solo HR and a 2-run double by Shane Spencer to get a comeback win. After Lefty Gomez tossed a complete-game, 6-hit shutout in Game 5 to give the 1936 team a 3-games-to-2 lead, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera combined to scatter 8 hits in a 2-1 win in Game 6, and the 1998 team hit 5 home runs in the deciding 7th game. Bill Dickey got the series MVP in a losing effort, hitting .448 with 3 HRs and 5 RBIs, while Joe DiMaggio hit .344 with 2 HRs and 8 RBIs. Tino Martinez hit .333 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs for the '98 team, with Bernie Williams adding 2 HRs and 6 RBIs. Rivera saved two games.

1947 Yankees beat 1961, 4 games to 0

Game 1: 1947 wins, 2-0
Game 2: 1947 wins, 3-2
Game 3: 1947 wins, 9-0
Game 4: 1947 wins, 9-3

Another "seeded" team falls, as the mighty 1961 Yankees offense is shut down by the 1947 team. The '47 Yanks only used 5 pitchers in the series, with Bob Newsom and Spud Chandler tossing complete-game shutouts and Spec Shea going 9 innings in the clincher. Only Bill Bevins needed some help, getting a 2-inning save from Joe Page in Game 2. Newsom got the series MVP for outdueling Whitey Ford in Game 1. Phil Rizzuto hit .438 for the '47 team, while Tommy Henrich hit .389 with an HR, DiMaggio hit .385 with an HR, and Yogi had 2 HRs and 4 RBIs. Mickey Mantle hit .417 with an HR and 2 RBIs for the '61 team, and Elston Howard hit .357. Ford and Ralph Terry were the hard-luck losers in Games 1 and 2, each tossing complete games.

So, the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1990s are represented in the Final Four, with 2 of the 5 teams that received byes making it through.

Here's the bracket so far:

Wow. The '27 and '61 teams are done.

You can't predict computer baseball, Suzyn.

I do not accept these results.

FAKE news.

I demand a recount.

The late Fidel Castro was clearly working with the late Hugo Chavez to manipulate the software to influence the results. I have evidence, very beautiful evidence, and I'll be showing it soon. A lot of people will be surprised.

So, the 1927 team lost to the 1932 team, which was basically the 1927 team, but with less starting pitching, less relief pitching, less speed, and two older superstars.

O-kay.

So, Doc Farrell played SS in a game for the 1932 team? The guy played 26 games that year, and batted .175.

BernBabyBern said...

Doc Farrell came in after Earle Combs pinch-hit for Lyn Lary in the 9th.

Wait ... do you sell overpriced pillows?

HoraceClarke66 said...

Ah.

... and if George Steinbrenner were alive in 1932, he would have been on a train to Scranton 10 minutes after the game ended.

And I'm aware that Scranton wasn't a Yankees farm team in 1932. George would've sent him there anyway.

Bah, humbug.

LBJ, I await the evidence you mention.

By the way, I hope all of you patronize my new pillow company.

You know, I always loved that Gary Sanchez. This is Sanchez's year, I said all spring. You watch: Gary will bounce back like a brand new Slinky.

BernBabyBern said...

Someone was running a poll on Twitter ...

"Will Gary Sanchez break
Barry Bonds' HR record?"

Now THERE'S an optimist!

Stanton fouls out with the bases loaded. Phew! We're NOT back in the Matrix.

I am still astonished that Hicks has any business batting in the 3 hole. Has the baseball world become turned upside down?

DickAllen said...

That should have read: “ACQUITTING”

HoraceClarke66 said...

Hicks is battling The Gleyber for the all-time, major-league LOB record this year.

BernBabyBern said...

Hicks is the kind of player that is loaded with "potential," shows flashes of brilliance, and you keep waiting for that big breakout season that you KNOW is coming ... until one day you suddenly realize he's turned 37 and is getting ready to retire and it never happened.

Can't help but think that Chapman's suspension saved that game.

Hey... a win is a win.

It also helps that Impaler, Jr., hasn't quite figured out the stretch at first.
