Bases loaded, Hicks steps up to the plate...

and I think, "Perfect situation for him. Maybe he'll draw a walk."

OK, yesterday it worked out, but I can't get used to the idea that my expectation was so low.

It's absurd.

Can you imagine...

My Grandfather in 1927 (Translated from the original Hungarian): "Oh good the Babe is up. Perfect situation for him. Maybe he'll draw a walk."

My Father in 1961 "Oh good Maris is up. Perfect situation for him. Maybe he'll draw a walk."

Me in 1976:  "Oh good Munson is up. Perfect situation for him. Maybe he'll draw a walk."

Me in 1985:  "Oh good, Mattingly is up. Perfect situation for him. Maybe he'll draw a walk."

Me in 1998:  "Oh good Bernie is up. Perfect situation for him. Maybe he'll draw a walk."

---

Here's an easy suggestion.  Bat Frazier 3rd.  "Oh good Frazier is up. Perfect situation for him. He'll probably lash a bases clearing double or, at a minimum, hit a long fly ball and get a run in."

There, that sounds better.

Totally agree, Doug.

As a no. 9 guy, Hicks is all right. As no. 3...

I second that emotion Doug and Hoss!

Boone's prayer the night after the game:

Now I lay me down to sleep (Hicks hasn't really gotten any hits worth remembering, but he took some good swings tonight. If he continues that, he'll break through, eventually), I pray the Lord my soul to keep, (Gary is seeing the ball well. Three strikeouts is obviously not what you want, but he's seeing the ball well. He's too good of a player not to hit the rest of the season) watch and guard me through the night, (if we keep getting traffic on the bases, we'll get those hits at some point) and wake me with the morning light (our starters are not giving us more than 4-5 innings, but did you see what King and Monty did? Savages!).

Amen

Amen Doug.

So, what do you think is the over/under on the number of days it will take before Brain Dead Boone moves Frazier up and uh...what was his name again...down on to 9 - or the bench?

All I can say is that there's a new rotten and expensive Odor in the Yankee dugout.

I kind of feel for Booney. He obviously realizes that our lineup is lopsided; that's why he keeps putting Hicks in the 3 slot. And he tries to work in some other lefty hitter like Bruce into the 7 slot. If he didn't, we'd have something like 1-6 or 1-7 as all righty hitters. That's hideous, ugly, to say the least. Against hard throwing right handed pitching, we have an all righty hitting lineup. Booney can only work with the guys on the roster. I'm sure they don't consult him when making roster decisions. Not saying he's right to put Hicks in the 3 slot. Hicks is basically a fourth outfielder. He doesn't hit enough to be a regular. It probably should be Clint Frazier in the 3 slot. But Boone is clearly hamstrung.

This is why I would have brought up Estevan Florial. Since we can't bring in any lefty hitters with any kind of potential, we might as well give our own prospects a shot. Instead of Jay Bruce, Gardner or Tauchman, we should've had Florial on the roster.

Instead, we have to endure watching Hicks, Bruce, Gardner. None of those three are going to hit their way out of a paper bag this year.

Rougned Odor is on his way to the Yankees.

The Yankees traded a pair of minor leaguers for the 27-year-old infielder on Tuesday. Odor was designated for assignment by the Rangers before Opening Day and has two years and $27 remaining on his contract, with Texas expected to pick up much of it. The Yankees sent outfielders Antonio Cabello and Josh Stowers to the Rangers.

Will someone please explain who the hell is Rougned Odor? and why is he suddenly a Yankee? Is it his non-existent left-handed bat?

He led the league in strikeouts in 2019, and last year he hit 167.

He's perfect.

Almost a clinic on bad clutch hitting in the first.

LeMahieu scorches a ball up the middle, nearly nails the Orioles starter. Judge scorches another ball up the middle, DOES hit the starter, Kremer, in the leg, at 109 mph. Trainer comes out, manager comes out. The rattled Kremer walks Gardy, hitting 3rd for reasons known only to the juju gods.

Stanton up. Hey, I admit it: I was thinking 2 nights, 2 grand slams. It's the sort of bottom feeding the Giancarlo specializes in. But hey: just two flyballs, and we're up 2-0.

Nope.

Stanton works the count to 2-2—fans on a 92-mph fastball down the pike.

The Gleyber SHOULD have been out on a pitch he swung at that was over his head. Instead, on a 3-2 count, and a ball about ankle-level and two feet off the plate...this time he can't hold up. Strike three.

Frazier up. I'm thinking, all right, now we'll see something. Three pitches. The last two he doesn't swing at, even though no. 3 is right over the plate, 94 mph.

Nada.

Three up, three pathetic strikeouts.

Gonna be a long year.

Gonna be a long decade.

We better get used to this. With Odor arriving, we get another home run hitter who strikes out a ton. We can do all the complaining we want (and what better way to be outraged in a socially acceptable manner) but this is what The Brain has created. It fits in with the overall approach MLB has taken and it’s not going to change.

Last year the Yankees led the league in OBP and I guess the thinking about putting Goober in the three hole is that he will likely wind up near 400 OBP. Ted Williams said that OBP is your batting average. And behind that is another power hitter. It will work well in the regular season and be the cause of death come October.

Hoss,

Too bad Hicks wasn't up. It was perfect situation for him. Maybe would have drawn a walk.

And the winner is... “The Bruce is Loose”

HoraceClarke66 said...

Dick Allen, I fear you have called it.

And Rougned Odor. Sounds like a hero from a Viking saga. We traded Shower Shoes for him, the guy we got for Sonny Gray ultimately, no? One of the leading pitchers in the NL for a back-up infielder. Oh, that Cashman!

HoraceClarke66 said...

And it occurs to me: does the arrival of Rougned the Red Beard mean that...the Yanks fear an infielder will soon hit the DL?

Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside said...

I figured backup for Bruce, who might soon find a ligament loose... and a bad sign for Tauchman recovery. Not that he’s the next fucking Mattingly or something.

"Bruce is loose"? That's Sterling's HR call for Jay Bruce? I think it might be gold-watch time.

Rougned Odor is the player who landed an incredible right cross to the jaw of that bat-flipping ass-clown José Bautista. For that, I will always be grateful.

The video is a little annoying; if you skip to 1:35, you'll see the punch. You seldom see one that effective, even in a boxing ring.

Odor is also a lefty bat, so there's that.

The Master's win warbles for these Baltimore games have been lame.....is it because they're the birds, or they won by 7 and 5 runs?

Barren Hicks is a .234 lifetime hitter. Back of the Baseball Card. Yes he walks. The guy is a stiff! Genius Cashman never signs a player in the middle of the season, yet he signed Hicks. Cashman, Sanchez, Hicks, need to take a hike.
