The Greatest World Series Ever: 1951 Yankees vs. 1998 Yankees, Game 2

The 1951 Yankees hold a 1-0 series lead thanks to a 7-4 win in Game 1.

We are once again at the renovated Yankee Stadium for Game 2 of the GWSE. Here are today's lineups:

1951 Yankees: Phil Rizzuto, SS; Hank Bauer, RF; Gil McDougald, 3B; Yogi Berra, C; Mickey Mantle, CF; Gene Woodling, LF; Bobby Brown, DH; Jerry Coleman, 2B; Joe Collins, 1B. Starting pitcher: Johnny Sain.

1998 Yankees: Derek Jeter, SS; Scott Brosius, 3B; Bernie Williams, CF; Paul O'Neill, RF; Jorge Posada, C; Tino Martinez, 1B; Chuck Knoblauch, 2B; Chad Curtis, DH; Shane Spencer, LF. Starting pitcher: Andy Pettitte.

Click below to find out how the game went ...

Top of the 1st: Hank Bauer continues his strong series with a one-out, solo home run to right against Andy Pettitte. With two outs, Chuck Knoblauch makes his second error of the series, booting Yogi Berra's grounder to keep the inning alive. Mickey Mantle singles Berra to second, and Gene Woodling singles to left to score Berra. Pettitte then issues back-to back walks to Bobby Brown and Jerry Coleman to force in a run. Joe Collins bloops a single to center to score Woodling, and the 1951 team takes a 4-0 lead. Phil Rizzuto bounces back to Pettitte to end the inning. Score: 1951 4, 1998 0.

Bottom of the 2nd: Jorge Posada leads off the inning by hitting a 2-2 pitch into the stands in right field. Score: 1951 4, 1998 1.

Top of the 3rd: Pettitte continues to struggle. Mantle leads off with a single to left, and Woodling walks. After Brown strikes out swinging, Coleman hits a single to shallow center to load the bases. Collins hits a grounder to second, with Coleman forced at second and Mantle scoring. Rizzuto again ends the inning with a groundout. Score: 1951 5, 1998 1.

Bottom of the 3rd: Derek Jeter lines a 1-out single to right, and then steals second. Scott Brosius then doubles to right-center to plate Jeter. Brosius moves to third on Bernie Williams' deep fly to center, but is stranded when O'Neill flies out to end the inning. Score: 1951 5, 1998 2.

Bottom of the 4th: With one out, Tino Martinez hits a ground-ball single to left, and moves to third on Knoblauch's single to right. Chad Curtis then hits an 0-1 pitch from Sain into the left-field seats, tying the game at 5-5. After Shane Spencer flies out, Jeter and Brosius hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Williams then hits a line single to center, scoring Jeter and moving Brosius to third. That's it for Sain, as Casey Stengel brings in Tom Morgan to pitch. A passed ball by Berra allows Brosius to score before O'Neill flies out to end the inning. Score: 1998 7, 1951 5.

Top of the 5th: Woodling leads off with a line single to left, and is sacrificed to second by Brown. After Coleman flies out, Collins triples to right-center to score Woodling. Rizzuto -- who had stranded five runners to this point -- comes through with a single to tie the game. That's it for Pettitte, as Joe Torre brings in Graeme Lloyd. A groundout by Bauer ends the inning. Score 1951 7, 1998 7.

Bottom of the 6th: Morgan gets himself in trouble, walking Curtis to start the inning (leadoff walks always comes back to haunt you, Susyn ...) and then walking Spencer as well. Jeter gets an infield hit to load the bases. It looked like Morgan would work his way out of it, getting Brosius and Williams to swing at third strikes, but Paul O'Neill hits a 396-foot grand slam into the seats in right to give the '98 Yankees a 4-run lead. Joe Ostrowski replaces Morgan and Jorge Posada reaches on an error by Rizzuto (his second of the series). Tino Martinez doubles in Posada and then comes around to score on a single by Knoblauch before Curtis flies out to end the inning. Score: 1998 13, 1951 7.

Top of the 9th: On the mound for the 1998 Yankees is none other than Hideki Irabu, who relieved Lloyd with 2 out in the 7th. Irabu gets Woodling and Brown to ground out and strikes out Jerry Coleman swinging to preserve the win and even the series.

FINAL SCORE: 1998 13, 1951 7

Series tied, 1-1.

For Game 3, we move from the renovated, 1990s version of Yankee Stadium to the original one.

Game 3 pitching matchup: Allie Reynolds vs. David Wells
