“We’re trying to bring baseball back during a pandemic that’s killed 130,000 people. We’re way worse off as a country than we were in March when we shut this thing down... We haven’t done any of the things that other countries have done... Sports are like the reward of a functioning society. And we’re trying to just bring it back, even though we’ve taken none of the steps to flatten the curve.”

The words of Nats reliever Sean Doolittle resonate, as MLB stumbles over testing players.

Several camps have temporarily closed, and more veteran players are opting out of the shortened season. Texas slugger Joey Gallo is latest to be sick with the virus.

The Yankees played an intra-squad game in their deserted stadium. It was on TV. Thairo Estrada homered. JA Happ and Clarke Schmidt pitched.

MLB released its schedules: The Yankees will play the Redsocks 10 times, seven in NYC and three in Boston. Bizarre, eh?

And here's a capper: For decades, those "Cinderella" Redsocks protected a racist sexual predator.

Sean Dolittle, the Kapernick of COVID19.

Our county of 60,000 have only 87 cases since March. Only 14 active cases at present, the rest have recovered and 2 deaths. I am not going to hide in a cave. Maybe New Yorker's should but there is more to America than hot spots in major cities. Let us know the current ACTIVE cases in each State. I know it not over until a vaccine is made. The virus will not leave the face of the earth without it or without community immunity.
Stay Safe!

It's not the same everywhere, Anon. That's a truth that's sometimes forgotten. And that's why blanket generic measures only cause resentment in smaller communities that haven't been hit or hit very hard. But remember, this thing always starts out small, wherever it lands. The trick is keeping it from getting bigger, and that does call for some precautions.

Many years ago, I wrote a public service anti-AIDS campaign. One of the ads showed a photo of a condom in its package, and the headline was, "Using it won't kill you. Not using it might."

It's kind of that way now, but you could put a mask in place of the condom.

Don't worry, anonymous. By the end of the first week of November, mirable dictu, the virus will have been conquered. No later than Thanksgiving, anyway. Too late for baseball unfortunately, but first things first: Gotta get the NFL showcase in. I should say there is a vanishingly small chance that things could go horribly, unutterably wrong that first week of November and the virus will be with us in everchanging, expanding, indefinable, unconquerable, nearly apocalyptic form, forever. Or at least until November 2024. But don't worry too much. Remember, there's strength in weakness. Only when you are truly terrified out of your wits are you truly courageous. All should be well.

Anon, don't kid yourself: positive tests have been skyrocketing in states all over the U.S., while they have greatly declined in NYC and the Northeast.

Yes, many of those infected elsewhere are young people, and so less likely to die. But now it looks as though many may well have serious, lifelong health problems.

Also, hospitals in many states are now close to being overwhelmed. Forget about COVID itself. Do you really want to live in a society where people are dying from things like burst appendices and regular fevers because they can't get a hospital bed?

Also, don't kid yourself about "herd immunity."

They developed that in Europe, all right, with the Black Death. All it took was that plague returning 6 TIMES IN THE 60 YEARS AFTER IT FIRST RAVAGED THE POPULATION.

What's thought to be the last major outbreak of the bubonic plague in Europe? Daniel Defoe's "Plague Year"—in 1665.

So yeah, you got "herd immunity." Only took about 317 years. Come 2336, you can tell us "I told you so."

And now Joe West comes out as a Covid Truther: “I don’t believe in my heart that all these deaths have been from the coronavirus."

The Cowboy, 5 decades of calling 'em as he sees 'em.

Fuck Joe Pigfucker West.

Joe West is the worst umpire in baseball history, and whatever he thinks, you better believe it's wrong.

HoraceClarke66 said...

I love the meaninglessness of that: "I know in my heart..."

Right.

I know in my heart that Jupiter is not really a planet, just a giant advertising sign put up by an alien race. HFS! "I know in my heart."

Why did he even bother to keep his eyes open when umpiring, if his heart was so perspicacious? Why be an umpire at all, when obviously he could just have stayed home and picked winning stocks all day?

Amazing that adults in public life actually feel free to say such things today.

Joe West is a big fat idiot whose name I shouldn’t know. Fall off the planet Joe.

I will print a few copies of the Red Sox child sex story and put them in select cubes at the office tomorrow. So ya like to diddle kids? Black kids? Wow... layer upon layer.

Perhaps I should have an expensive bronze plaque made up for Fenway Park... “Upon this site from 1970 to 1998 the Red Sox Clubhouse Manager sexually abused dozen of young black boys. For this reason and among other eternal shames, this plaque shall remain here as a reminder... until the Red Sox dissolve they franchise, or change their name and move to Topeka.” Glue that thing up with some industrial construction adhesive in the middle of the night and call the Herald.

TheWinWarblist said...

Hoss, what makes you think Joe Pigfucker West kept his eyes open when he was umpiring?

HoraceClarke66 said...

Right you are, Warbler!

And yeah, ol' Fitzy in the Red Sox clubhouse. And here I thought the worst Fenway employees were the ones who actively attacked our players in the playoffs, something that of course would have been an automatic forfeit if it happened in Yankee Stadium.
